Former FBI Special Agent & Hostage Negotiator; Crisis Negotiation, Deception Detection and Leadership Decision-Making Expert; Co-Author of "Convince Me"
Chip Massey Biography
Chip Massey is a former FBI special agent, hostage negotiator and counterintelligence investigator who spent more than two decades operating at the highest levels of national security. Massey began his career at the FBI's Washington, D.C., field office on foreign counterintelligence and espionage squads, working alongside the CIA and other intelligence agencies to identify foreign spies, expose Americans acting against their country and build federal cases that protected national security.
Massey received advanced training in human behavior, surveillance and interviewing techniques and conducted investigations in multiple countries in both official and covert capacities. He later became one of the FBI's elite hostage negotiators, resolving life-and-death situations where reading human behavior was not a skill, it was survival.
Massey is co-founder of Convincing Company and co-author of the book "Convince Me: High-Stakes Negotiation Tactics to Get Results in Any Business Situation." He brings FBI-caliber insight on human behavior under pressure, crisis communications, negotiation, deception detection and leadership decision-making to C-suite executives, boards and organizational leaders worldwide. His proprietary frameworks, including Forensic Listening, Pattern of Life profiling and the 22 Second Reading, translate the most demanding profession in the world into immediately actionable business intelligence. Corporate clients have included Facebook/Meta, Samsung, Goldman Sachs, Deutsche Bank, Lockheed Martin and Johnson & Johnson. Massey has appeared on CNN, Fox News, NBC, CBS and BBC and has trained leaders at West Point, Princeton, Cornell, Columbia and Georgetown.

Forensic Listening: The FBI's Most Powerful Tool for Business Leaders
Most leaders think they're good listeners. They're not. There's a profound difference between hearing what someone says and understanding what they actually mean — and that gap costs organizations millions in failed negotiations, misread relationships, and missed opportunities.
Chip Massey spent decades as an FBI hostage negotiator and counterintelligence investigator in situations where misreading a person wasn't just costly — it was fatal. In this transformative session, he introduces Forensic Listening, a proprietary framework that goes beyond active listening to reveal the hidden narratives, unstated agendas, and emotional patterns driving every conversation.
This is not a soft skills session. It is a tactical, immediately applicable methodology drawn from the highest stakes profession in the world and translated directly into the boardroom, the negotiating table, and the leadership suite.
Attendee Results:
Identify the unstated narrative driving any conversation and use it to your advantage
Recognize emotional patterns, voice changes, and behavioral signals that reveal what people aren't saying
Apply the Four Quadrant Forensic Note Taking system to capture what most leaders miss entirely
Conduct any high stakes conversation — board meetings, negotiations, crisis situations with dramatically greater insight and confidence
Transform listening from a passive activity into your most powerful competitive advantage

The Spy in the Room: What Counterintelligence Teaches Us About Deception, Trust, and Protecting Your Organization
Every organization has vulnerabilities it cannot see. Some are structural. Some are technological. The most dangerous are human.
Chip Massey began his FBI career identifying foreign spies operating inside the United States and exposing American citizens working against their own country. Working alongside the CIA and other intelligence agencies, he learned that the most sophisticated threats don't announce themselves — they build trust, exploit loyalty, and operate invisibly until the damage is done.
In this eye opening session, Chip translates the counterintelligence tradecraft used to protect national security into a practical framework for protecting your organization. Whether the threat is a competitor, an insider, a foreign adversary, or simply a culture that has normalized dishonesty, the detection principles are the same.
In a geopolitical climate where corporate espionage, insider threats, and foreign adversary interference in business have never been more prevalent, this session gives leaders the awareness and tools they urgently need.
Attendee Results:
Understand how deception actually operates at the organizational level and why smart people miss it
Apply FBI counterintelligence principles to identify insider threats and organizational vulnerabilities
Recognize the behavioral and communication signals that indicate deception, disloyalty, or hidden agendas
Build a culture of appropriate trust that protects without paralyzing
Develop a practical framework for assessing foreign and competitive exposure in your specific industry
