Urban Designer & Civic Entrepreneur; Founding Principal at Sixpitch; Creator of the Atlanta BeltLine; Author of "Where We Want to Live"
Ryan Gravel Biography
Ryan Gravel is an urban designer, author, and civic entrepreneur recognized for his impact on urban planning and infrastructure development. As an AICP and LEED AP professional, Gravel specializes in site design, infrastructure, concept development, and public policy, serving as founding principal at Sixpitch. His master's thesis at Georgia Tech introduced the concept for the Atlanta BeltLine, a 22-mile transit greenway designed to connect neighborhoods, parks, and commercial districts by repurposing abandoned rail corridors.
Following graduate school, Gravel developed and promoted the BeltLine concept, distributing information to government officials and transit authorities. The project gained traction, drawing attention from elected officials, regional planners, and transit agencies. The Atlanta BeltLine has since evolved into a multibillion-dollar infrastructure project, connecting 40 neighborhoods and influencing urban development and transportation policy in Atlanta.
In addition to the BeltLine, Gravel led the creation of Atlanta City Design, a framework guiding the city's growth and urban transformation. He is the author of "Where We Want to Live," which explores the repurposing of 20th-century infrastructure to meet contemporary urban needs and advocates for cities that foster connectivity and improved quality of life.
Gravel has emphasized the importance of equity and affordability in urban development, resigning from the Atlanta BeltLine Partnership board to highlight concerns about inclusivity along the BeltLine corridor. His advocacy for equitable urban planning has positioned him as a prominent voice in the field.
Gravel's work has been featured in New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Monocle, The Guardian, The Globe and Mail, CityLab, CNN International, USA Today, and Esquire Magazine. His honors include the Southface Institute's Argon Award, Trees Atlanta's Individual Tree Champion award, and the Trailblazer award from the South Fork Conservancy. He has been recognized among the 100 Most Influential Georgians by Georgia Trend Magazine, the GOOD 100 by GOOD Magazine, and Top 25 Newsmakers by Engineering News-Record. Gravel serves as board chair of Generator and on the board of the Partnership for Southern Equity, continuing his work in inclusive urban transformation and city planning.
