Innovative Architect & Sustainable Design Leader; Founder of Kengo Kuma & Associates; Designer of Japan National Stadium
Kengo Kuma Biography
Kengo Kuma is an architect recognized for integrating traditional Japanese design principles with contemporary global architecture. Kuma studied architecture at the University of Tokyo and conducted research at Columbia University in New York before founding Kengo Kuma & Associates. He serves as a University Professor and Professor Emeritus at the University of Tokyo and is a member of the Japan Art Academy, following teaching appointments at Keio University and the University of Tokyo. Kuma's architectural philosophy, which he describes as "Anti-Object," emphasizes the use of natural materials, light, and environmental harmony over imposing forms.
Since establishing Kengo Kuma & Associates, Kuma has completed projects in more than 20 countries, amassing a portfolio of over 300 completed works. Notable projects include the Japan National Stadium in Tokyo, designed for the Olympic Games, which features overlapping wooden eaves and integrated greenery, merging advanced engineering with Japanese aesthetics. Other significant works include the Asakusa Culture Tourist Center in Tokyo, the V&A Dundee museum in Scotland, the GC Prostho Museum in Japan, the Yusuhara Wooden Bridge Museum, and the Saint-Denis Pleyel station in Paris. These projects demonstrate Kuma's focus on sustainable architecture, innovative use of materials, and sensitivity to cultural and environmental context.
Kuma lectures internationally and has authored several books and articles on contemporary architecture. His publications include "Anti-Object: The Dissolution and Disintegration of Architecture," "Kyokai: A Japanese Technique for Articulating Space," and "Natural Architecture." These works, translated into multiple languages, are widely referenced in international architectural education and discourse on Japanese aesthetics. Kuma's installations have been exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts and V&A Museum in London, and a monographic exhibition was presented at Palazzo Farchetti in Venice.
Kuma's work has received international recognition, including the Spirit of Nature Wood Architecture Award in Finland, the Grand Prize for JCD Design Award for Cultural/Public Institutions, and the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology's Art Encouragement Prize for the Yusuhara Wooden Bridge Museum. He is an International Fellow of RIBA in the United Kingdom and an Honorary Fellow of the AIA in the United States. Kuma was named the recipient of the Andrée Putman Lifetime Achievement Award by the Créateurs Design Association & Awards. Through his buildings, writings, and teaching, Kuma contributes to the ongoing evolution of sustainable architecture and the integration of natural materials in contemporary design.
