Cristina Bicchieri Biography

Cristina Bicchieri is a philosopher specializing in ethics, social science, and human behavior. She holds the S.J.P. Harvie Professorship of Social Thought and Comparative Ethics in the Philosophy Department at the University of Pennsylvania, where she also serves as a professor in the Legal Studies department of the Wharton School and is a member of the Graduate Group in Psychology. Bicchieri directs the Center for Social Norms and Behavioral Dynamics, focusing her research on the nature and evolution of social norms and the design of behavioral experiments to examine the conditions under which norms are followed. Her work is recognized in the fields of behavioral ethics, social norms, and collective behavior.

Bicchieri earned her Laurea in Philosophy from the University of Milano and her PhD in Philosophy of Science from Cambridge University. Prior to joining the University of Pennsylvania, she taught in the Philosophy and Economics program at Barnard College, Columbia University, in the Philosophy department at Notre Dame University, and in the departments of Philosophy and Social and Decision Sciences at Carnegie Mellon University. Her research interests span philosophy, game theory, and psychology, with a primary focus on judgment and decision making, particularly in areas such as fairness, trust, cooperation, and the influence of expectations on behavior.

Bicchieri is the author of more than 100 articles and seven books, including "Rationality and Coordination," "The Logic of Strategy," "The Dynamics of Norms," and "Knowledge, Belief, and Strategic Interaction." Her major works include "The Grammar of Society: The Nature and Dynamics of Social Norms" and "Norms in the Wild: How to Diagnose, Measure and Change Social Norms." Drawing on methods from social psychology, experimental economics, and evolutionary game theory, Bicchieri offers an integrated account of how social norms emerge and the factors influencing adherence to them. Her theory of social norms challenges traditional methodological assumptions in the social sciences, emphasizing that many successful choices occur without extensive rational deliberation.

Bicchieri has extensive experience consulting and directing research projects on behavioral measurement and change with organizations such as the National Science Foundation, UNICEF Child Protection Section, World Bank, Ford Foundation, Gates Foundation, Templeton Foundation, Koch Foundation, and BBC Media. She regularly delivers international lectures on social norms and leads an annual training on social norms and social change for UNICEF. Her research encompasses social norms measurement, behavioral and field experiments on norm change, cooperation, and fairness on social networks, with additional work examining the role of trendsetters in social change and the impact of network structures on behavioral change.

Bicchieri is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the German Academy of Sciences, has been knighted by the Italian government, named Honorary Fellow of Wolfson College at Cambridge University, and awarded the Pufendorf Medal in Sweden. She has held fellowships at Harvard, Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin, Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study in the Social Sciences, London School of Economics, and the Institute for Advanced Studies at the University of Jerusalem.
