Richard Thomas Biography

Richard Thomas is an actor whose career spans more than six decades, encompassing Broadway, film, and television. At age seven, Thomas made his Broadway debut in "Sunrise at Campobello," marking the beginning of a lifelong commitment to stage performance. His early film roles include the auto racing drama "Winning" with Paul Newman and the coming-of-age story "Last Summer." These performances established Thomas as a young actor with notable range.

Thomas became recognized worldwide for his portrayal of John-Boy Walton in the TV series "The Waltons," based on the life of writer Earl Hamner Jr. He appeared in the original CBS television film "The Homecoming: A Christmas Story," which inspired the series, and played John-Boy Walton in 122 episodes. For this role, Thomas won an Emmy Award, received another Emmy nomination, and earned two Golden Globe Award nominations. During his tenure on the series, he also directed five episodes of "The Waltons." The show's sign-off, "Goodnight, John-Boy," became a fixture of American pop culture, and Thomas has acknowledged its lasting association with his career.

Throughout his career, Thomas has pursued a wide range of roles in television and film. He starred as Bill Denbrough in the television miniseries adaptation of Stephen King's "It" and played Special Agent Frank Gaad on FX's spy thriller series "The Americans." He is also recognized for roles in "Ozark" and "Billions," demonstrating his continued presence in contemporary television drama. His feature film credits include appearances in Ang Lee's "Taking Woodstock" and Curtis Hanson's "Wonder Boys."

Thomas's stage career includes acclaimed performances in productions such as "The Little Foxes," "Race," "Democracy," "Incident at Vichy," and "The Stendhal Syndrome," as well as numerous Shakespeare productions. He appeared in the Broadway revival of "The Little Foxes" and was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Play. Across the country, Thomas has starred in national tours of "The Humans" and as Atticus Finch in Aaron Sorkin's "To Kill a Mockingbird." He has also appeared in the world premiere of "The Balusters," a play by David Lindsay-Abaire directed by Kenny Leon, on Broadway, which earned him a Tony nomination.

In addition to his artistic work, Thomas has addressed personal challenges, including a diagnosis of cochlear otosclerosis in his 30s, which resulted in significant hearing loss and the use of hearing aids. He has served as the Better Hearing Institute's national chairman, using his experience to advocate for hearing health. With a career that bridges stage, television, and film, Thomas is recognized as a versatile and enduring performer in the entertainment industry.
