Pioneering Marketing Thought Leader & Business Strategist; Distinguished Professor at Kellogg; Author of "Marketing Management"
Philip Kotler Biography
Philip Kotler is recognized as a leading authority in marketing and a prominent business thinker. He served as the S. C. Johnson & Son Distinguished Professor of International Marketing at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, where he taught for more than 50 years. Kotler earned his master's degree at the University of Chicago and his doctorate at MIT, both in economics, studying under Nobel Laureates Milton Friedman, Paul Samuelson, and Robert Solow. This multidisciplinary foundation in economics, mathematics, and behavioral science provided Kotler with an analytical approach to marketing.
Kotler's major contribution to marketing theory is the publication of his first book, "Marketing Management," which is widely regarded as a foundational text in marketing. The book has sold millions of copies and has been translated into more than 25 languages. Its frameworks, including the marketing mix, market segmentation, and value delivery, have been adopted in MBA programs and are commonly used in marketing education. In addition to "Marketing Management," Kotler has authored over 80 books, such as "Principles of Marketing," "Kotler on Marketing," "Marketing Insights from A to Z," "Marketing 4.0," "Marketing Places," "Marketing of Nations," "Chaotics," "Social Marketing," "My Adventures in Marketing," and "Winning at Innovation." He has also written or co-authored more than 188 articles and 105 books covering topics like corporate social responsibility, innovation, education, government, tourism, and democracy.
Kotler has been recognized as a leading expert on strategic marketing. He was voted the first Leader in Marketing Thought by the American Marketing Association and named the Founder of Modern Marketing Management in the Handbook of Management Thinking. Kotler holds major awards, including the American Marketing Association's Distinguished Marketing Educator Award and the Distinguished Educator Award from the Academy of Marketing Science. A Financial Times survey ranked him among the most influential business thinkers worldwide. He has been inducted into the Marketing Hall of Fame and has received 22 honorary doctorates from universities across Europe, Asia, and the Americas.
Kotler has consulted for companies such as IBM, General Electric, AT&T, Honeywell, Bank of America, and Merck in areas including marketing strategy, planning, organization, and international marketing. He has also advised governments on developing and positioning their companies for global competition. Kotler lectures internationally and founded the annual World Marketing Summit to address global markets and poverty alleviation. He has been recognized by the World Marketing Summit for his lifelong contribution to global marketing thought.
Kotler was among the first to articulate that demand is influenced not only by price but also by advertising, promotion, direct sales, and other marketing and distribution channels. He maintains that consumer well-being is central to marketing. Kotler also advanced the idea that marketing applies to products, services, nonprofits, and government services. His later work has addressed economic justice and the limitations of capitalism, with books including "Confronting Capitalism: Real Solutions for a Troubled Economic System," "Democracy in Decline: Rebuilding its Future," "Advancing the Common Good," and "Brand Activism: From Purpose to Action." Throughout a career spanning more than six decades, Kotler has continuously expanded the boundaries of marketing thought, maintaining a significant influence in the field of marketing and business strategy.
