Chris Herren was a basketball legend from Fall River, Massachusetts who scored over 2,000 career points while at Durfee High School and was named to the 1994 McDonald's All-American team. Herren realized his lifelong dream of playing in the NBA when he was drafted by the Denver Nuggets in 1999 and then traded to his hometown Boston Celtics in 2000. Herren struggled with substance use for much of his basketball career. Alcohol and drugfree since August 1, 2008, he chronicled his journey to recovery in his memoir, Basketball Junkie, as well as in the Emmy nominated ESPN Films documentary Unguarded, of which he is the subject. In June of 2009, he began sharing his story with audiences across the United States with the hope of reaching just one person and making a difference in their life. To support this vision, he founded The Herren Project in 2011, a nonprofit organization dedicated to bringing awareness to the disease of addiction by providing navigation, recovery housing and coaching scholarships, family support and educational initiatives. Most recently in March of 2018, Chris founded Herren Wellness, a health and wellness organization that offers innovative prevention and recovery treatment solutions, with a focus on self discovery.
