Danny Trejo: Sober 46 Years and Giving Back | AARP - YouTube
Danny Trejo developed a prolific career in the entertainment industry with a hard-earned and atypical road to success. From years of imprisonment to helping our youth battle drug addictions, from acting to producing, and now on to restaurant ventures, Trejo’s name, face, and achievements are well recognized in Hollywood and beyond.
Trejo grew up on the streets of Los Angeles. Despite spending the latter part of his early adulthood incarcerated, Danny has worked hard to maintain a drug-free and positive lifestyle, and he celebrates over fifty years of sobriety. Upon his release from Soledad Prison, Danny became involved in programs aimed at helping those who, like him, battled or currently battle drug and alcohol addictions.
Years into his journey as a drug and alcohol counselor, Danny visited the set of RUNAWAY TRAIN to offer support to a man he’d been counseling. Upon arriving to set, Danny was immediately offered a role as a convict. Since then, he has gone on to star in dozens of films including DESPERADO, HEAT (Robert de Niro, Al Pacino), the FROM DUSK TILL DAWN film series, CON AIR (Nicolas Cage), ONCE UPON A TIME IN MEXICO (Johnny Depp), and the SPY KIDS movies. An appearance in Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino’s GRINDHOUSE led to a spin-off movie based on the original trailers called, MACHETE, in which Danny plays an ex-federale with a gift for wielding a blade.
The success of MACHETE spawned a sequel, MACHETE KILLS, which boasts a star-studded cast, including Mel Gibson, Charlie Sheen, and Amber Heard, to name a few. He then co-starred in DEATH RACE: INFERNO where he reprised his role as Goldberg from DEATH RACE 2. Living up to his well-established persona, Danny next starred in the BAD-ASS trilogy where he plays a veteran who avenges a friend’s murder. In BAD ASSES 2, Danny paired up with Danny Glover, who also co-starred in the final film of the trilogy. Trejo is also featured in Rob Zombie’s 3 FROM HELL, a follow up film to THE DEVIL’S REJECTS, and GRAND DADDY DAY CARE alongside Reno Wilson, both set to release in 2019. Trejo later appeared alongside Tina Fey and Ray Liotta in MUPPETS MOST WANTED. In addition, Trejo can also be seen in DEAD AGAIN IN TOMBSTONE, the sequel to DEAD IN TOMBSTONE, for Universal.
On Television, Danny reunited with Robert Rodriguez for Miramax’s From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series. He held recurring roles on Sons of Anarchy and King of the Hill, Breaking Bad, and The Flash, and has been featured in episodes of Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Kidding, among others. Also, Danny has a series in development with ABC, currently entitled Food & Familia.
Additionally, Trejo has voiced numerous animated characters, such as the role of Skeleton Luis in THE BOOK OF LIFE, produced by Guillermo del Toro and directed by Jorge R. Gutierrez. His other work includes the recurring character of El Moco on Netflix’s Puss in Boots, Bane on Cartoon Network’s Young Justice, and Filthy the Foot on Nickelodeon’s Pig Goat and Banana Cricket. Recently, Danny has lent his voice on episodes of Family Guy, American Dad, and Rick and Morty. In addition, Trejo voices Jasper in Warner Bros’ new animated film STORKS.
If you didn’t think Trejo was busy enough, he recently expanded his Trejo’s Tacos empire to two new locations, including the Hollywood area and the Southwest Terminal at LAX, and is set to open a new location at the Original Farmer’s Market later this year. Trejo’s Coffee & Donuts has also proven to be just as successful.
Despite Danny’s impressive list of credits, it’s his continuous roles as a devoted father of three and an intervention counselor that bring him the most satisfaction.
