Antoine van Agtmael Biography

Antoine van Agtmael is a Dutch American financial analyst and investor recognized for introducing the term "emerging markets" to global finance. While working at the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and promoting a global listed equity investment fund for developing countries, van Agtmael coined the term to replace "Third World" investing, influencing the perception of developing economies and defining a new asset class. This shift contributed to increased capital flows into markets previously overlooked by institutional investors.

Van Agtmael's career includes leadership roles at major financial institutions. He was the principal founder, CEO, and chief investment officer of Emerging Markets Management LLC, an investment management firm focused on emerging markets, which he led for 25 years. He also served as deputy director at the IFC, division chief at the World Bank, managing director at TISCO, and vice president at Bankers Trust. At IFC, van Agtmael established the IFC Emerging Markets Database, providing analytical infrastructure for investors in developing economies.

As an author, van Agtmael has written several books on global finance and economic development. His works include co-authoring "The Smartest Places on Earth," authoring "The Emerging Markets Century" and "Emerging Securities Markets," and co-editing "The World's Emerging Stock Markets." "The Emerging Markets Century" examines the rise of companies such as Samsung Electronics, Lenovo, CVRD, and Infosys, and their impact on the global economy. "The Smartest Places on Earth" explores the transformation of former industrial centers in the United States and Europe into hubs of innovation and design.

In addition to his investment and writing activities, van Agtmael has taught at Georgetown Law Center, Thammasat University, and the Harvard Institute of Politics, and has lectured internationally. He serves as board chair of the Smithsonian National Museum of Asian Art, a director of University of the People, and has held positions with Magnum Photos, The Brookings Institution, and its International Advisory Council. Van Agtmael also serves on advisory boards for the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Yale Jackson School of Global Affairs, and is a member of the Yale President's Council on International Activities and the Council on Foreign Relations. His work spans finance, academia, arts, and public policy, contributing to the understanding of economic development and global investment trends.

Antoine van Agtmael Speaking Topics

  • The Emerging Markets Century

A new breed of world leading companies are catching their Western competitors off-guard. House-hold names of today are in danger of becoming has-beens as these more innovative new superstars in the emerging markets claim dominance. Understanding how they have become world-class market leaders, and where they are taking the world economy is crucial to understanding not only the future of globalization, but the future of Western competitiveness.

  • The Global Economy

In this vital speech, visionary international investment manager Antoine van Agtmael -- the pioneer who coined the term "emerging markets" -- pulls back the curtain on the Global Economy. Picking up where Thomas Friedman's The World Is Flat left off, he persuasively demonstrates why we must look beyond our borders to get a better understanding of what is driving the tumultuous change in the Global Economy. By exposing the seismic shifts caused by Emerging Markets and our interconnected economies, Antoine reveals how competitive challenges and investment risks are also being dramatically transformed, while new opportunities are arising for those who are alert to them.
