Political Economist, Commentator, Lawyer, Author & Actor
Ben Stein Biography
Ben Stein is the most famous economics teacher in America. His comedic role as the droning economics teacher in "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" is by far the most widely viewed scene of economics teaching in economics history and has been ranked as one of the fifty most famous scenes in movie history. In real life, Stein is a prominent speaker on economics, politics, education, history, and motivation -- and like his father, Herbert Stein, considered one of the great humorists on political economy and how life works in this nation.
Stein has a bachelor's degree with honors in economics from Columbia University, studied economics at the graduate level at Yale University, and is a graduate of Yale Law School, where he was elected valedictorian of his class in 1970. He has as diverse a resume as any man in America. That background includes: poverty lawyer in New Haven, CT; trade regulation lawyer for the Federal Trade Commission; speech writer for Presidents Nixon and Ford; columnist and editorial writer for The Wall Street Journal; teacher of law and economics to undergraduates at University of California, Santa Cruz and law school students and undergrads at Pepperdine University.
Stein has authored or co-authored approximately 30 books on various subjects, including investing and economic theory. Among these, "Yes, You Can Time The Market," co-written with Phil DeMuth, is recognized as a landmark of using price theory for securities market analysis. Stein's tenure as a columnist for The New York Times, from roughly 2004-2009, allowed him to discuss economics extensively.
He co-hosted the Comedy Central game show "Win Ben Stein’s Money" with Jimmy Kimmel, which earned multiple Emmy Awards, including awards for best game show host. Today, he contributes columns for The American Spectator and NewsMax, and is a regular commentator on Fox News and "CBS Sunday Morning," in addition to being a frequent voice on CNN.
