Robert Reich Biography

Robert B. Reich is an economist, professor, author, and political commentator whose career spans government service, academia, and public discourse. Reich has served in the administrations of Presidents Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, and as the 22nd U.S. Secretary of Labor under President Bill Clinton. Educated at Dartmouth College, Oxford University, and Yale Law School, Reich began his career in law and government before transitioning to academia, teaching at Harvard University and later serving as professor of public policy emeritus at the Goldman School of Public Policy at the University of California, Berkeley.

As Secretary of Labor, Reich implemented the Family and Medical Leave Act, led efforts against sweatshops in the United States and illegal child labor globally, advocated for raising the minimum wage, secured workers' pensions, and launched one-stop career centers and school-to-work initiatives. Under his leadership, the Department of Labor received more than 30 awards for innovation. Time Magazine named him one of the Ten Most Successful Cabinet Members of the century, and The Wall Street Journal included him among America's Top Ten Business Thinkers. Reich also served as an advisor and member of President Barack Obama's economic transition advisory board.

Reich has written 18 books, including the bestsellers "The Work of Nations," "Aftershock," and "The System: Who Rigged It and How We Fix It." "The Work of Nations" has been translated into 22 languages, and his other titles include "Saving Capitalism," "The Common Good," and "Locked in the Cabinet." Reich received the Václav Havel Vision Foundation Prize for his work in economic and social thought. His articles have appeared in The New Yorker, The Atlantic, The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The Wall Street Journal. He is a columnist for Newsweek and The Guardian and authors a daily newsletter.

Reich's work in economic policy and social justice extends to film, co-creating the documentary "Inequality for All" and the Netflix original documentary "Saving Capitalism." The film "Inequality for All" won a U.S. Documentary Special Jury Award for Achievement in Filmmaking at the Sundance Film Festival. Reich is co-founding editor of The American Prospect magazine, co-founder of the Economic Policy Institute, and co-founder of Inequality Media. He speaks extensively on income inequality, labor policy, and the future of capitalism, contributing to ongoing discussions about economic and political challenges in the United States.
