Sports Journalist & Coach; Advocate for Women in Sports Media and Football; Author of "When the Men Were Gone"
Marjorie Herrera Lewis Biography
Marjorie Herrera Lewis is a sports journalist, author, and coach whose career has contributed to advancing women in sports media and football. After beginning her career at local newspapers, Lewis joined the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, where she became the first woman assigned to the Dallas Cowboys beat, marking a significant moment in American sports journalism. She later joined the SportsDay staff of The Dallas Morning News, covering the NFL, Dallas Mavericks, Texas Rangers, Wimbledon, and the Davis Cup, establishing herself as a versatile sportswriter.
Lewis drew on her experience in sports journalism for her debut novel, "When the Men Were Gone", a work of historical fiction based on the true story of a woman coaching high school football in Brownwood, Texas during World War II. The book received recognition from Sports Illustrated, Newsweek, and the American Book Fest, and was included in Reader's Digest Select Editions in the United States and Portugal. The novel has been optioned by Mandalay Pictures for a feature film adaptation. Lewis also co-edited "SportsDay Bound", a collection of sports stories from The Dallas Morning News.
Inspired by the subject of her novel, Lewis joined the Texas Wesleyan University football coaching staff, working with defensive backs and assisting in the press box on game days, becoming the only female college football coach at any level during that season. She teaches media ethics at the University of North Texas, has endowed the Marjorie Herrera Lewis Speakers Series at Texas Wesleyan University, and has delivered a TED talk. Lewis co-hosts "Journey Through Sports and Life," a weekly show streaming on DBTV and available on podcast platforms.
Lewis was appointed commissioner of the Global Flag Football League, an international professional flag football league, as the sport expands its global reach. She holds a doctorate from Murray State University and graduate degrees from multiple institutions. Lewis's career spans sports journalism, authorship, coaching, and executive leadership, with a focus on sports, gender equity, and leadership in athletics.
