Price Fishback Biography

Price V. Fishback is an economic historian known for his data-driven research on the political and economic forces that shaped the United States from the late nineteenth century through the mid-twentieth century. Fishback holds the Thomas R. Brown Professorship of Economics at the University of Arizona, is a Fellow of the TIAA-CREF Institute, and serves as a research associate with the National Bureau of Economic Research. He has been awarded a Regents Professorship by the Arizona Board of Regents. Fishback's research focuses on the American economy from 1890 to 1950, employing economics, statistics, and narrative sources to analyze historical developments.

Fishback's work covers labor markets, government regulation, and policy experiments during the New Deal era. He has conducted extensive studies on the political economy of the New Deal, examining the determinants and impacts of New Deal spending and loans on local economies across the United States. His research also addresses state labor legislation during the Progressive Era, the American economy during World War II, and agricultural changes in response to climate, government policy, and technology. Fishback's research is recognized for its empirical approach and has been supported by National Science Foundation grants, with findings published in peer-reviewed articles, literature surveys, and books.

Among his publications, "Soft Coal, Hard Choices" analyzes how competition among employers and collective bargaining influenced coal miners' working conditions in the early 1900s. His book with Shawn Kantor, "A Prelude to the Welfare State," examines the development and impact of workers' compensation systems, earning the Paul Samuelson Certificate of Excellence from the TIAA-CREF Institute and the Lester Prize for Outstanding Book in Labor Economics and Industrial Relations from the Industrial Relations Section at Princeton University. Other significant works include "Well Worth Saving: How the New Deal Safeguarded Homeownership" and "Government and the American Economy: A New History."

Fishback's surveys in Journal of Economic Literature highlight the influence of progressive employers on labor law reforms and the effects of New Deal programs on socio-economic outcomes. His research shows that agricultural programs often benefited large farmers at the expense of tenants, croppers, and workers. Fishback is the editor of the Markets and Governments in American History book series published by University of Chicago Press.

Within the economics profession, Fishback has served as co-editor of Journal of Economic History and as president of the Economic History Association. The Economic History Association has recognized him with the Arthur Cole Prize for Best Article in Journal of Economic History and the Jonathan Hughes Prize for Excellence in Teaching Economic History. Fishback has been named to the Society of Fellows of the Economic History Association. He has received multiple teaching awards and has contributed to the training of more than 100 Ph.D. recipients, maintaining a significant presence in economic history research and education.
