Stephen S. Roach Biography

Stephen S. Roach is a macroeconomist whose career spans the Federal Reserve, Wall Street, and Yale University. Roach holds a doctorate in economics from New York University and a bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. After earning his doctorate, he served on the research staff of the Federal Reserve Board, where he supervised the preparation of official Federal Reserve projections of the U.S. economy. Before joining Morgan Stanley, Roach was a research fellow at the Brookings Institution.

Roach spent three decades at Morgan Stanley, primarily as chief economist, leading a global team focused on macroeconomic forecasting and analysis. He later served as chairman of Morgan Stanley Asia, developing expertise in China and its role in the global economy. Roach joined the Yale faculty, becoming the first senior fellow at the Jackson Institute of Global Affairs and a senior lecturer at the School of Management. He later joined Yale Law School's Paul Tsai China Center. At Yale, Roach developed courses on Asia, including "The Next China" and "The Lessons of Japan." His research addresses globalization, trade policy, post-crisis policy architecture, and the capital markets implications of global imbalances.

Roach is the author of several books, including "Accidental Conflict: America, China, and the Clash of False Narratives," which examines the escalation of conflict between the United States and China. His earlier works, "Unbalanced: The Codependency of America and China" and "The Next Asia: Opportunities and Challenges for a New Globalization," analyze the economic relationship between the United States and China, as well as Asia's economic imbalances and dependence on Western consumers.

Roach's focus on the U.S.-China relationship reflects his experience as a U.S. economist and analyst of China's economic rise. His commentary appears regularly on Project Syndicate. Roach is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, the Investment Committee of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Economics Advisory Board of the University of Wisconsin, and the Advisory Board of New York University's Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.
