Dr. Newsha K. Ajami Biography

Dr. Newsha K. Ajami is a hydrologist, civil engineer, and environmental policy expert whose career bridges science, policy, and governance. Ajami is known for her expertise in sustainable water resource management, smart cities, water policy, and finance. She specializes in the water-energy-food nexus and applies data science principles to study the human and policy dimensions of urban water and hydrologic systems. Her early work introduced Bayesian model averaging in hydrology, advancing hydrologic forecasting and uncertainty assessment. Notable research projects include "IBUNE" (An Integrated Bayesian Uncertainty Estimator for Hydrologic Prediction), "Machine Learning and Data Analytics for Demand Forecasting and Infrastructure Planning," and studies on the "Media-Water Demand Nexus" and the "Wildfire-Water Nexus."

Ajami has held positions at leading institutions in science and public policy. Ajami held a Science, Policy, and Technology fellowship at the California State Senate's Natural Resources and Water Committee, contributing to water and energy legislation. She later served as Chief Strategic Development Officer for Research in the Earth and Environmental Sciences Area at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, leading initiatives at the intersection of water, energy, and climate. Ajami is the founding director of the Program on Governance for Risk, Resilience, and Recovery at the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability.

Ajami has held public service roles focused on translating research into policy and practice. She served as a mayoral appointee to the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission and completed two terms as a gubernatorial appointee to the Bay Area Regional Water Quality Control Board. Ajami also served on the National Academies Board on Water Science and Technology and is a nonresident senior fellow at the Brookings Institute. She co-led the development of the Aspen National Water Strategy for the Aspen Institute, a national roadmap designed to strengthen U.S. water security, modernize infrastructure, and align water management with economic growth and climate resilience.

Ajami is a fellow of the American Geophysical Union and recipient of the AGU Ambassador Award, recognized for her leadership in connecting science, policy, and society, advancing science communication, and mentoring interdisciplinary thinkers. She has contributed to water policy frameworks at state and federal levels, influencing water management in California and beyond. Ajami has published numerous research articles and co-authored three books. Her work has been featured in The New York Times, The Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, NPR, and PBS.
