Monty Criswell Biography

Monty Criswell grew up on the coast of Alabama and began his professional songwriting career in 1993, after graduating from the University of Alabama and passing on an acceptance to law school.

Criswell is a two-time Grammy nominee for Country Song of The Year (“I Saw God Today” and “Just Fishin’) and won the CMA Single of the Year award in 2008 (”I Saw God Today”).

In 2021, his Eric Church song “Hell Of A View” won the Music Row Awards Song of the Year award and received a CMA nomination for both song and single of the year.

Criswell is also an ACM, Dove and Canadian CMA nominee. His songs have been featured on ESPN, ABC, The SEC Network, The Hallmark Channel and the hit tv series Yellowstone. Criswell’s had over 300 songs recorded over the span of his 30-year career as a full-time songwriter, having at least one #1 in each of the last three decades.

His songs have been recorded by such artists as Jake Owen, Kenny Chesney, Justin Moore, Brantley Gilbert, Chris Young, Darius Rucker, Eric Church, George Strait, Scotty McCreery, Tim McGraw, Josh Turner, Drake White, Riley Green, Breland, Parker McCollum, Dan Tyminski, Lainey Wilson, Luna Halo and Trace Adkins among others. On the most recent Trace Adkins album, several of Criswell’s songs include collaborations between Trace, Luke Bryan, Pit Bull, Keb Mo’, Stevie Wonder and Snoop Dogg.

    Monty has always been taught not to work until he was finished but to work until he was proud. And that changing on the fly or in mid stream is permissible, if it makes for a better outcome.

    We’ll go through a simple concept of living life two weeks at a time. It’s what Monty had to do as he went through chemo working toward surgery for colon cancer. It made him much more efficient at work and in life.

    Finally, Monty will walk through the top things he learned while beating cancer, and the top funniest things that happened to him while he beat cancer (yes, humor and a positive mindset are two of our greatest weapons).

    We’ll do all of this while Monty will tell you how he became a hit songwriter, and let you in on the stories behind the songs. And we’ll play some of those hits as well.

  • Health Coaching

    After one of Monty Criswell’s shows, a colorectal surgeon came up to Monty and said, “Thank you for putting a face on what we do and adding some humanity to all of this.” Monty’s journey has taught and continues to teach him transferrable skills, skills that he wants to share with his audiences.

    Different kinds of cancer require different kinds of chemo and treatments, but the will to survive and the mental toughness it requires can be universal. Monty will show you what he learned during treatment, how he was able to physically and emotionally cope. How important it is to have a caregiver who understands and how important it is for that caregiver to also have a support system in place for them; caregivers are many times under huge amounts of stress and strain in their attempt to care for their loved one. Monty was fortunate…his wife DeNesha is a retired oncology geneticist. She spent over 30 years in the industry diagnosing cancer and running laboratories. There’s nothing like having an expert holding your hand and explaining everything throughout the entire process.

    Monty still has oncology bloodwork and cancer antigen appointments. He has an annual scan and an annual scope. He understands the questions that come with those.
