David S. Shapiro Biography

David S. Shapiro, MD, MHCM, is a physician, surgeon, and executive healthcare leader, most recently serving as a Chief Medical Officer and Vice President of Medical Affairs at a large, urban, level I trauma center. He served as the Chief Quality Officer there for more than six years, and led the evolution toward a highly reliable organization. He has roles as Associate Professor of Surgery at the Frank Netter School of Medicine at Quinnipiac University and has been given the same appointment at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine. He was a Curriculum Developer for patient safety, leadership, and high reliability training among medical students and graduate medical trainees.

Dr. Shapiro is trained as a general surgeon, specializing in surgical critical care, trauma, and acute care surgery and is Board Certified in Surgery, Critical Care and in Hospice & Palliative Care. He is the past President of the Connecticut Chapter of the American College of Surgeons, and serves the College nationally as a leading collaborator for STOP THE BLEED®, an empowerment program helping bystanders to treat bleeding and save lives. This project honored Dr. Shapiro in contributing to a Hasbro® ‘comic book’ featuring the STOP THE BLEED® program in the popular “GI Joe: A Real American Hero” series. Dr. Shapiro has been featured in two documentaries, including "Between the Shades," a film about the perceptions of LGBT people, and "The Sweetest Land," an assessment of violence prevention work in Hartford. He is also past President of the Northeast Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM) and served the national SCCM on council.

In addition, Dr. Shapiro is a founding member of the Association of Out Surgeons and Allies, a nonprofit dedicated to empowering LGBT surgeons and trainees to pursue their careers and engage allies in all types of organizations. He has been awarded the Sisters of Joseph of Chambrey Award, the Hartford Yard Goats ‘Triple Crown’ Award, and has been recognized as an advocate for injury and violence prevention and a leader in modern healthcare.

Following an undergraduate degree at Boston College, Dr. Shapiro earned his medical degree and surgical residency at the University of Connecticut, served a fellowship at the Oregon Health Science University, and earned a master's degree in healthcare management at the Harvard School of Public Health. He is a well-published author and editor, and for his research and ongoing programs has been funded over $1.8 million over his professional career thus far, and participates in a variety of research topics from firearm injury prevention to LGBT issues in healthcare.

    Modern medicine is facing a crisis of identity -- at all levels, there are shortages of specialties and we cannot afford to ignore the discrimination and exclusivity that prevents multiple societal groups from joining professions. Specifically, this refers to the exclusivity in surgical specialties and how uncomfortable they have made the LGBTQ population and prevented their interest. Whether you are LGBT or not, we all must actively attract all possible candidates to our respective professions -- there is talent hidden behind closet doors and in inaccessible areas of our even more segmented populations.

    This event instructs the participants on how to best approach inclusivity for the LGBTQ population, with assurances that the 'invisible' segments of our populations are sometimes the most important to address directly. The concept of human resources and recruitment excluding key questions may be surpassed by simply acknowledging self and assuring we are attracting the right candidates from the so-called fringes. Constantly attending to the needs of certain groups is easier than originally thought, and can absolutely bring important discussions forward.

    In addition, the ability for programs to assure feelings of safety among our constituents once they join remains important. Macro- and micro-aggressions can be fleeting, and must be addressed in a constructive way. When we open our minds to the possible, opportunities present themselves and confirm we provide access to those with enthusiasm and engagement.

  • Safety and Engagement in your Environment

    Traumatic injury is unpredictable, and constantly challenges providers to assure no item is missed, no stone is unturned in discovering injuries, and the attention to detail is an imperative part of driving a practice. Safety starts in the field with strong immediate, first, and secondary responders assuring they collect all the data available, including details of the injury, so that the tertiary and hospital-based teams are focused on fixing the challenges.

    Checklists are only as useful as their use and understanding; processes are only as refined as we make them and observe them compliantly; the reason we must drive towards proper steps and including every reason and rationale is to assure that our learners, passive and active, are continuing to dedicate their lives to lifelong learning. This is how we make care better.
