We live in the era of a digital health revolution, fueled by technological advances that are rapidly changing how we screen, diagnose, and treat illness while maintaining health and wellness. Hardware advances have allowed for increased remote monitoring and software advances, including artificial intelligence algorithms, have allowed for optimization in screening and treating illness. This talk will delve into how different technological advances can be harnessed for optimal health and wellness, highlighting the latest research in the field and placing this in the context of social engagement. We will also talk about ethical considerations and design factors that impact how novel technologies may be translated into programs that benefit human health. After all, the future of healthcare will be defined by the human experience in the face of illness…and during periods of wellness.

We live in times of global conflict, where war and persecution leave countries in shambles and force people to leave the places they have long called home. Among over 120 million forcibly displaced people worldwide in mid-2024, 43.7 million were granted refugee status. Many others were internally displaced in an effort to escape violence and disaster. Their experiences and journey away from violence is often punctuated by poverty, hopelessness, and trauma. In turn, this journey has a lasting impact on the psychological and physical well-being of forcibly displaced individuals. In this talk, we will walk through the factors that impact human health and wellness faced by forcibly displaced individuals and illustrate with examples how social and public health initiatives have helped address these challenges. We will also talk about how forced migration can interrupt the care of chronic medical conditions, causing exacerbations or progression of illness. Finally, we will talk about national and international policies and guidelines that impact healthcare for those experiencing forced migration.
