Marc H. Sasseville Biography

Lieutenant General (Ret.) Marc H. Sasseville is a retired officer of the United States Air Force and Air National Guard. Sasseville led organizations of varying sizes during a 39-year military career. He graduated from the United States Air Force Academy with a Bachelor of Science in international affairs and earned a Master of Science in aeronautical science from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. After completing pilot training, Sasseville served in operational units within United States Air Forces Europe, Tactical Air Command/Air Combat Command, and Pacific Air Forces.

On September 11, 2001, Sasseville was acting operations group commander under the 113th Wing of the D.C. Air National Guard. He was assigned the mission to intercept United Airlines Flight 93 during the September 11 attacks. Sasseville and fellow pilot Heather Penney prepared to engage the hijacked aircraft as a last resort, but passengers intervened and prevented the attack. Sasseville has reflected on the events of 9/11 as formative in his approach to leadership and preparedness. He continued his service, eventually becoming a three-star general and the deputy chief of the National Guard Bureau.

Sasseville held command and diplomatic roles throughout his career. He served as commander of the 113th Wing, District of Columbia Air National Guard at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland, and was the first Hispanic American to hold the position. While serving as Commander of Continental US North American Defense Region, Commander Air Forces Northern, and Commander First Air Force, Sasseville oversaw air defense and general-purpose air capabilities for North America, addressing peacetime air sovereignty, wartime defense, and disaster response. He also led Northern Command's response to Hurricane Dorian. As the U.S. Senior Defense Official and Defense Attaché to Türkiye, Sasseville was a member of the Ambassador's country team and the European Combatant Command staff, overseeing foreign military sales and intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions.

In his final military assignment, Sasseville served as Vice Chief of the National Guard Bureau, participating in the Department of Defense's primary governance mechanisms. In this capacity, he assisted the Chief of the National Guard Bureau as a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and as an advisor to the Secretary of Defense, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Secretary of the Army, and Secretary of the Air Force. His career included more than 3,300 flight hours in various aircraft. Sasseville's military decorations include the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, Distinguished Service Medal, Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit, and Bronze Star Medal, among others.

Since retiring, Sasseville has remained active in national security and public service. He serves as executive director of the Rapid Prototyping Research Center at George Mason University, is an adjunct senior researcher with RAND, and holds director and advisory roles on several boards. Sasseville is a lifetime member of the Council on Foreign Relations. His experience includes building and defending the Air Force budget, leading multinational coalitions in combat, and integrating space capabilities into military operations. Sasseville is recognized for his expertise in leadership, national security, and crisis decision-making.
