Baba Shiv Biography

Baba Shiv is a leading figure at the intersection of neuroscience, marketing, and human behavior. He holds the Sanwa Bank, Ltd., Professor of Marketing chair at Stanford Graduate School of Business. Shiv has conducted extensive research on the emotional brain, documenting its role in shaping decisions and experiences, with applications in innovation and entrepreneurial leadership across companies from Silicon Valley startups to Fortune 500 corporations, as well as in countries including India, Malaysia, and New Zealand.

Shiv's research expertise centers on neuroeconomics, with a focus on how neural structures related to emotion and motivation influence decision making and consumer behavior. His work explores the interplay of the brain's liking and wanting systems and their implications for marketing strategy, innovation, leadership, and decision science. Among his notable findings is the concept that marketing can function as a placebo, a discovery that led to a landmark paper. In recognition of his contributions, Shiv received the American Marketing Association William F. O'Dell Award for a Journal of Marketing Research article that made a significant, long-term impact on marketing theory and practice. Two of his research papers also received the Citation of Excellence from Emerald Management Reviews.

Shiv teaches courses at Stanford Graduate School of Business and the Hasso Plattner Institute of Design at Stanford, including "The Frinky Science of the Mind," "Scaling Design Thinking Globally," and "Crafting Interventions for Massive Change." He regularly leads executive education programs at Stanford on strategy, entrepreneurial leadership, and customer-focused innovation. Shiv received Stanford GSB's Robert K. Jaedicke Silver Apple Award and was named MBA Teacher of the Year for three consecutive years at the University of Iowa, followed by MBA Elective Faculty Member of the Year for four consecutive years.

Shiv has served as editor of Journal of Consumer Research and is a member of the editorial boards for Journal of Consumer Psychology, Journal of Retailing, Journal of Marketing, and Journal of Marketing Research. Journal of Consumer Research cited an article coauthored by Shiv on the conflict between emotion and cognition in decision making as one of the most influential papers in its history. He consults with and serves on advisory boards for several startups.

Shiv's research examines how decision making and economic behavior are shaped by neural mechanisms and how the brain fosters creativity. His public speaking engagements and published research have contributed to the broader understanding of the neuroscience of creativity and motivation. His work has been featured in media outlets including The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, CNN, Economic Times, Fox Business, Financial Times, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, NPR, and Radio Lab.
