Steve Mellor Biography

Born and raised in Chester, England, Steve Mellor is an example of getting out what you put in through all phases and across all areas of his life. Mellor discovered and established his competitive edge in the sport of swimming from a young age and before the age of 20 he had taken that fire to the heights of a top-50 world ranking, swimming for his country, and being awarded a scholarship to swim in the NCAA. As a student-athlete at NC State he was a 3-time ACC medalist, an NCAA Championships qualifier, and a US Open finalist, but he was somehow still scratching the surface of being associated with elite performance.

In 2011, Mellor was recruited to Louisiana State University as a swim coach where over the course of the decade he guided athletes to record-setting heights and even achieved milestones that this prestigious university had never seen. Having coached athletes to SEC Championships, All-American status, and international competitions the world over, in the summer of 2021 he guided LSU’s first US Olympic qualifier in swimming to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. His athlete, Brooks Curry, then became an Olympic Gold Medalist as a member of the American’s 4x100m freestyle relay team, and LSU had its first Olympic champion swimmer.

Following this historic achievement, Mellor decided to leave the world of swimming and explore how he could apply his ability to realize potential and optimize performance on a larger scale. In the fall of 2021 Mellor founded his company Career Competitor which was born out of the same-named podcast he started in the summer of 2018. While the podcast’s mission is to shed light on how athlete-like traits can serve individuals in their respective career, the business was founded to spark competitive fires in clients to pursue their optimal self in search of optimal performance. Through executive coaching and culture consulting, today Steve is doing what he does best – getting the most out of others – with business owners, executive teams, leaders, and competitors across all industries.

In October of 2022, Mellor became an author with the release of his debut book "SHOCK THE WORLD! A Competitor’s Guide to Realizing Your Potential" where he takes readers through a series of “shocks” to prompt the pursuit of realizing one’s potential. The book presents three key areas of development Mellor believes we should target in pursuit of our potential: inward steps, process steps, and action steps. These three phases of personal development not only offer readers the direction they need to pursue their dreams, but it sheds light on what has been at the heart of Mellor’s coaching approach for years.

Whether it be his book, his current coaching work, the decades of involvement in elite sport, or just his DNA, Mellor oozes a passion for the pursuit of human potential. As a speaker, Mellor brings his enthusiasm and commitment towards maximizing potential through the form of intentional and inspiring content. A storyteller by nature, Mellor takes pride in connecting the experiences of himself and others with impactful lessons for audiences to latch onto and see themselves in as well.
