Tribal Governance Leader & Principal Chief of Muscogee (Creek) Nation; TIME 100 Most Influential; Aerospace Management Veteran
David W. Hill Biography
David W. Hill serves as the seventh Principal Chief of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation in the modern era of tribal government, leading one of the United States' largest federally recognized tribes. Before his tenure in tribal leadership, Hill worked for three decades in the aerospace industry, including 23 years in management, where he developed a disciplined approach to organizational leadership and operations.
Prior to his election as Principal Chief, Hill completed three consecutive four-year terms as a representative on the Muscogee (Creek) Nation National Council. During his legislative service, he participated on the Tribal Affairs Committee, Business, Finance and Justice Committee, Internal Affairs Committee, and the River Spirit Casino/Hotel Expansion Oversight Committee. Hill was also selected by his peers to serve as National Council Sergeant-At-Arms and Second Speaker for two terms each.
Hill was elected Principal Chief in the modern era of Muscogee (Creek) Nation tribal government and subsequently won reelection with a majority of the vote. His leadership has focused on tribal sovereignty, self-determination, and the protection of treaty rights. Under Hill's guidance, the Nation gained international attention for its response to the COVID-19 pandemic and its efforts to uphold sovereignty following the Supreme Court decision in McGirt v. Oklahoma. This ruling reaffirmed that the Muscogee (Creek) Nation's treaty-reserved lands in eastern Oklahoma had not been disestablished.
Hill has consistently advocated for tribal rights in the wake of McGirt v. Oklahoma, emphasizing the Nation's longstanding tradition of self-governance and legal autonomy. He has addressed Congress and engaged with federal policymakers on issues related to tribal jurisdiction, governance, and treaty obligations. Hill's policy initiatives at the Nation's headquarters include implementing the first maternity leave program, establishing a buy-back program for unused leave, and reinstating sick leave donation among employees.
Hill's leadership has been recognized by TIME Magazine, which named him among the 100 Most Influential People in the World. Northeastern State University announced plans to award him an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa, in recognition of his contributions to tribal governance, education access, and community development in Oklahoma. Hill's career spans aerospace management and tribal leadership, positioning him as a prominent figure in Native American governance, tribal sovereignty, and public policy.
