Tom Rand Biography

Tom Rand’s focus is on carbon mitigation as an entrepreneur, venture capitalist, author and speaker. He is co-founder and managing partner of ArcTern Ventures and sits on the board of a number of clean energy companies and organizations. He also developed Planet Traveler, a low-carbon hotel project in downtown Toronto.

A proven and successful entrepreneur, Rand founded Voice Courier Inc. (VCi) in 1991 to service the emerging Interactive Voice Response market. Under Rand’s direction, VCi expanded to over 100 employees in three countries, with revenue in excess of $20 million US annually. The VCi Group of Companies was profitable for each of the twelve years it was under his control, and was sold in 2005.

One of the most creative and courageous public speakers in North America, Rand challenges his audiences to recognize that there are concrete solutions to the climate change crisis. Despite enormous skepticism from political and business leaders, he remains undaunted by those who insist that climate change is not real or can’t be mitigated. He is widely sought after for his ability to take enormously complicated issues and reformulate them in ways that engage his listeners, speaking as a scientifically literate entrepreneur and investor. He has delivered keynote addresses at universities, energy conferences, corporate engagements, and public events. Offering a perspective that is both pragmatic and optimistic, Rand’s bare-knuckled approach is refreshingly straightforward, while balancing the economic, political, scientific and technological sides of this important topic.

Rand's first book "Kick the Fossil Fuel Habit" (2010) was winner of the 2011 Whitepine Non-Fiction award; his second - "Waking the Frog" - became a bestseller in Spring 2014; his third - "Climate Capitalism: Economic Solutions for a Planet in Crisis" was published early 2020. His work addresses the most important subjects of our time: solar, wind, geothermal, biofuels, hydropower, ocean, smart buildings, transportation, efficiency and conservation and the energy internet. Numerous published articles have appeared in The Globe and Mail, Canadian Business Magazine, Clean Energy North America, and The Mark News, to name a few.

Rand holds a BSc in electrical engineering (U of Waterloo), an MSc in philosophy of science (University of London and LSE) and an MA and PhD in philosophy (U of Toronto), is an Action Canada Fellow, and has been a member of a number of federal and provincial advisory boards. Rand is a regular contributor on Canada’s leading op-ed pages and television, and you will often see him on stage waving his arms as he speaks passionately about the intersection of climate risk and economics.
