Arie Kapteyn Biography
Arie Kapteyn is a professor of economics at the USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences and the founding executive director of the Center for Economic and Social Research at the University of Southern California. Kapteyn joined USC after serving as a senior economist and director of Labor and Population at RAND Corporation, where he led research teams on projects analyzing financial planning, Americans’ knowledge of Social Security, and comparative life satisfaction in the United States and the Netherlands. He also served as director of the Roybal Center for Financial Decision Making and associate director of the Financial Literacy Center, a joint initiative of RAND, Dartmouth College, and the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. Prior to RAND, Kapteyn spent nearly 20 years at Tilburg University in the Netherlands, where he was professor of economics, dean, and founding director of several institutes.
Kapteyn’s research interests include applied welfare economics, preference formation, household decision making, leisure and labor supply, econometrics of panel data, latent variables, consumer demand, savings, aging, and retirement. His research often focuses on aging and economic decision making, with work on retirement, consumption and savings, pensions and Social Security, disability, and the economic well-being of older adults. Kapteyn leads projects on the measurement and explanation of subjective well-being, the analysis of health and economic determinants of retirement in the U.S. and Western Europe, and economic decision making related to retirement and saving. His expertise covers microeconomics, public finance, and econometrics, including the application of mathematics and statistical methods to economic data.
Kapteyn is recognized for developing innovative data collection methods, particularly in the design and organization of probability internet panels. He was the founding director of the CentERpanel in the Netherlands, the oldest existing probability internet panel. At RAND, Kapteyn contributed to the development of the RAND American Life Panel, a nationally representative internet panel used for social science research. At USC, he oversees the Understanding America Study, a panel of approximately 14,000 households representing the United States, with much of the data and methodologies made publicly available.
Kapteyn’s work has influenced public discourse, especially in political polling. The Understanding America Study has been used for major political polls at USC, including the USC Dornsife/Los Angeles Times Daybreak Poll, which measured voter confidence and commitment using a probability-based approach. This methodology has contributed to advancements in survey science and public opinion research.
Kapteyn is a Fellow of the Econometric Society, a recipient of the Knight in the Order of the Netherlands Lion, and a corresponding member of the Netherlands Royal Academy of Arts and Sciences. He also received the Koopmans Medal from the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration at Tilburg University. With more than 20,000 citations, Kapteyn’s work spans econometrics, behavioral economics, aging, and survey methodology, contributing to both academic research and policy development.
