Michael Auslin Biography

Michael Auslin is a historian specializing in U.S. foreign policy and geopolitics, with a particular focus on Asia. Previously a professor of history at Yale, Auslin is the inaugural Payson J. Treat Distinguished Research Fellow at Stanford University’s Hoover Institution, the senior advisor for Asia at the Halifax International Security Forum, and a senior fellow at the Foreign Policy Research Institute.

Auslin is the author of several books, including "Asia’s New Geopolitics" and the best-selling "The End of the Asian Century," which forecast many of the crises affecting the Indo-Pacific region. His academic works include "Negotiating with Imperialism" and "Pacific Cosmopolitans," both published by Harvard University Press. Auslin is a long-time contributor to The Wall Street Journal and writes regularly for Financial Times, Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, and The Spectator. He also hosts the Pacific Century podcast. Auslin has advised government and corporate clients on geopolitical risk and addresses civic groups and media worldwide.

Auslin was elected a fellow of the Royal Historical Society and serves as vice chairman of the Wilton Park USA Foundation. He has been recognized as a Young Global Leader of the World Economic Forum, a Fulbright Scholar, a German Marshall Fund Marshall Memorial Fellow, an honorary fellow of the Foreign Policy Association, and a term member of the Council on Foreign Relations.

Auslin’s books have been banned by Chinese authorities. He is a frequent commentator on U.S.-China relations and Indo-Pacific security at international forums and in broadcast media, and briefs policymakers and business leaders on strategic risks in Asia.
