Norm Lewis Biography

Norm Lewis is an American actor and baritone singer known for his extensive work in musical theater, television, and film. Lewis made his Broadway debut as a member of the ensemble in the musical "The Who's Tommy." His journey to the stage began after studying business in college and working in advertising and production at The Orlando Sentinel. While singing in local contests, he was offered a performance opportunity on a cruise ship, which led to encouragement from professional performers to pursue Broadway auditions in New York.

Lewis has performed in a range of iconic Broadway roles, including Jake in "Side Show," Javert in the revival of "Les Misérables," King Triton in "The Little Mermaid," and Porgy in "The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess." For his role as Porgy, he received a Tony Award nomination for Best Actor in a Musical and a Drama Desk Award nomination for Outstanding Actor in a Musical, as well as nominations from the Drama League and Outer Critics Circle. His additional Broadway credits include "Sondheim on Sondheim," "Chicago," "Amour," "The Wild Party," and "Miss Saigon."

Lewis became the first African-American actor to portray the Phantom in Broadway's "The Phantom of the Opera," a role he later reprised in "Love Never Dies" in London's West End. In the West End, he also appeared as Javert in "Les Misérables" and in "Les Misérables: The 25th Anniversary Concert," which aired on PBS. His off-Broadway work includes playing Sweeney Todd in "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street" at Barrow Street Theatre, earning the AUDELCO Award for his performance.

In addition to his stage work, Lewis is an Emmy, Grammy, Tony, and SAG Award nominee. He was nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture for his role as Eddie in Spike Lee's "Da 5 Bloods," and earned a Grammy Award nomination for Best Musical Theater Album as part of the cast of "Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert." His television credits include roles in "Scandal" as Senator Edison Davis, "Pose" as Pastor Vernon Jackson, ABC's "Women of The Movement," and the Apple TV animated series "Central Park."

Lewis is a founding member of Black Theatre United, an organization dedicated to supporting Black talent and communities in theater. He has been featured on PBS in "Live From Lincoln Center" productions of "Show Boat" with Vanessa Williams, "Norm Lewis: Who Am I?", and "New Year's Eve: A Gershwin Celebration" with Diane Reeves, as well as "American Voices" with Renée Fleming. Lewis's career spans musical theater, television, and film, with performances recognized for their range and impact across the performing arts industry.
