J. Kenji Lopez-Alt Biography

Chef J. Kenji López-Alt is a food writer and James Beard Award-winning author recognized for his expertise in the science of cooking. López-Alt holds a bachelor's degree from MIT and has worked in restaurant kitchens before transitioning to food media. He contributed to Cook's Illustrated and America's Test Kitchen, then joined Serious Eats as managing culinary director and later chief culinary advisor. At Serious Eats, López-Alt developed the site's recipe program and wrote a regular column that led to his first book.

López-Alt applies the scientific method to cooking, focusing on recipe development and culinary science. His Serious Eats column, "The Food Lab," served as the basis for his debut book, "The Food Lab: Better Home Cooking Through Science," which became a New York Times Bestseller and received the James Beard Foundation Award for General Cooking, as well as honors from the International Association of Culinary Professionals. The book has sold more than 1 million copies and is widely referenced in the culinary industry for its approach to molecular gastronomy and home cooking techniques.

López-Alt authored the children's book "Every Night Is Pizza Night" and the cookbook "The Wok: Recipes and Techniques." Both titles became New York Times Bestsellers, with "The Wok" earning a James Beard Foundation Award and recognition from Washington Post, Time, and NPR. All three of his books have appeared on The New York Times bestseller list.

López-Alt is a monthly columnist for The New York Times Cooking and cohosts "The Recipe" podcast with Deb Perelman. He also hosts "Kenji's Cooking Show" on YouTube, where he demonstrates recipes and cooking techniques through point-of-view videos. López-Alt co-founded Wursthall, a beer hall-style restaurant in San Mateo, California. Through his books, columns, videos, and live events, López-Alt is known for making culinary science accessible to both professional chefs and home cooks.
