Financial Economist & Nobel Laureate; Co-Developer of Black-Scholes Option Pricing Model; Chief Investment Strategist at Janus Henderson Investors
Myron S. Scholes Biography
Myron S. Scholes is a Canadian-American financial economist recognized for his contributions to global finance, particularly in the development of the Black-Scholes option valuation formula. Collaborating with Fischer Black, Scholes introduced a mathematical model that provided investors with a benchmark for valuing options, significantly influencing the growth of the options trading industry. Prior to this advancement, investors lacked effective methods for determining the future value of options.
Scholes completed his graduate studies at the University of Chicago, earning an MBA from Booth School of Business and a Ph.D. under the supervision of Eugene Fama and Merton Miller. He began his academic career at MIT Sloan School of Management, where his research in asset pricing with Black and Robert C. Merton led to the Black-Scholes/Merton option pricing model. The article detailing this model was published in Journal of Political Economy after initial rejection. Scholes later taught at the University of Chicago and joined Stanford University as a professor of law and finance, eventually becoming emeritus.
Scholes shared the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences with Robert C. Merton for work that extended the Black-Scholes formula to broader areas of finance. He holds the title of Frank E. Buck Professor of Finance, Emeritus, at Stanford Graduate School of Business. Beyond derivatives, Scholes has conducted research on global tax policies and co-authored the book "Taxes and Business Strategy." He has received the Innovator of the Year Award from Chicago Mercantile Exchange and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Derivatives Association, in addition to holding honorary doctorate degrees and membership in the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
MIT Sloan School of Management recognized Scholes with the S. Donald Sussman Award for his achievements in quantitative investment strategies. In the financial industry, Scholes has served as a principal and limited partner at Long-Term Capital Management, managing director at Salomon Brothers, Edward Eagle Brown Professor of Finance at the University of Chicago, senior research fellow at Hoover Institution, and director of the Center for Research in Security Prices. Scholes serves as chief investment strategist at Janus Henderson Investors, focusing on asset allocation, macroeconomic insights, quantitative analysis, hedging, risk management, and portfolio construction. He is known for his work in options pricing, capital market equilibrium, tax policy, and the financial services industry.
