Additionally, she won the WTA Tour Championships in 1980 and the 1981 year end Toyota Championships, both in singles, before a series of injuries cut her career short. Since 1979, she has held the record as youngest ever US Open female singles champion and is the youngest inductee of all time in the International Tennis Hall of Fame. Austin has won singles titles on all playing surfaces: clay (both red clay and green clay), indoor carpet, grass and hard courts. She also works Austin as a commentator for NBC and the USA Network for the French Open and the US Open.

In 1977, she was the youngest winner of a pro tournament when she won her first title at Avon Futures of Portland, Oregon, at the age of 14 years, 28 days. That same year, as an unseeded amateur, she reached the quarterfinals of the US Open. In 1979, Austin became the youngest ever US Open champion, aged 16 years and 9 months, by defeating Navratilova in the semifinals and Chris Evert in the final. The Associated Press named Austin its Female Athlete of the Year for 1979.

In 1980, she ranked No. 1 in the world and set a new record as the youngest No. 1 ranked player in tennis history. From 1978 to 1983, she was ranked in the Top Ten, and from 1980-81, she was No. 2.

In 1981, she won her second US Open title in a thrilling tiebreak finish over Martina Navratilova. After injuries limited her schedule, she began her comeback in 1988 but then was involved in a near-fatal car accident that resulted in a broken leg. At the age of 29 years, 7 months, Austin became the youngest inductee into the International Tennis Hall of Fame.
