Morgan Freeman is a prominent figure in Hollywood as an actor, director and narrator. He has received Academy Award nominations for his performances in "Street Smart," "Driving Miss Daisy," "The Shawshank Redemption" and "Invictus." He won the Oscar in 2005 for "Million Dollar Baby" and has also received a Golden Globe Award and a Screen Actors Guild Award.
Freeman’s breakthrough came in 1967 when he was cast in an all-African American Broadway production of "Hello, Dolly!" starring Pearl Bailey. He gained national exposure in 1971 as a regular on "The Electric Company," a public television children’s show focused on teaching literacy skills. Despite the demands of television and stage work — including a Tony-nominated performance in "The Mighty Gents" in the late 1970s — Freeman sought to break into films.
His movie career gained momentum when he was cast as a prison inmate in the Robert Redford film "Brubaker." After a two-year stint on the soap opera "Another World," Freeman earned an Academy Award nomination for best supporting actor for his role in "Street Smart" in 1987. His critical acclaim continued with performances in "Driving Miss Daisy," "The Shawshank Redemption," "Se7en" and "Deep Impact." In 2005, Freeman won the Academy Award for best supporting actor for his performance in Clint Eastwood’s "Million Dollar Baby" and later portrayed Lucius Fox in the blockbuster sequels "The Dark Knight" and "The Dark Knight Rises."
Freeman’s distinctive voice has been featured in numerous films, including "War of the Worlds" and the Academy Award-winning documentary "March of the Penguins." In addition to acting, he co-founded the production company Revelations Entertainment, which included the online distribution venture ClickStar.
Alongside his acting career, Freeman has been involved in philanthropic efforts. He has raised money for victims of Hurricane Katrina and, through his Rock River Foundation, donated millions to educational programs. He helped organize relief funds for hurricane victims in Grenada in 2004. Freeman also co-owns a blues club in Clarksdale, Mississippi. In 2014, he converted his ranch into a bee sanctuary as part of his environmental advocacy. In June 2021, Freeman and University of Mississippi professor Linda Keena donated $1 million to establish the Center for Evidence-Based Policing and Reform. He previously served in the United States Air Force from 1955 to 1959 and holds a private pilot’s license.
Freeman’s career continues with roles in films such as "The Nutcracker and the Four Realms," "Angel Has Fallen" and "The Comeback Trail." He performed at the 2022 FIFA World Cup opening ceremony in Qatar and continues his narration work as host of the National Geographic series "The Story of God with Morgan Freeman" and "The Story of Us with Morgan Freeman."
