Marc Andreessen

Marc Andreessen is a software engineer, entrepreneur, and investor recognized for his significant contributions to internet technology and venture capital. While studying computer science at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications at the University of Illinois, Andreessen collaborated with Eric J. Bina to co-author the web browser "Mosaic." This browser introduced a graphical user interface that allowed users to view images alongside text, a development widely credited with popularizing the internet and expanding web accessibility.

Following his graduation, Andreessen partnered with Jim Clark, founder of Silicon Graphics, to launch Mosaic Communications Corporation in Mountain View, California. Due to trademark concerns, the company was renamed Netscape Communications, and its flagship product became "Netscape Navigator." The browser quickly dominated the market, achieving over 75 percent market share and driving rapid growth in internet usage. Netscape's initial public offering brought Andreessen to national attention, including a cover feature in Time. Netscape was later acquired by AOL for $4.3 billion.

Andreessen continued to shape the technology landscape by co-founding companies that advanced cloud computing, social media, and e-commerce. After the acquisition of Netscape, he co-founded Opsware with Ben Horowitz and others. Originally known as Loudcloud, Opsware provided computing, hosting, and software services to internet and e-commerce businesses, becoming one of the first to offer software as a service and cloud hosting. Hewlett-Packard ultimately acquired Opsware for $1.6 billion. Andreessen also co-founded Ning, an online platform for building social networking sites.

Andreessen and Horowitz later established the venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz, which began with an initial capitalization of $300 million and grew to $2.7 billion under management across three funds. The firm has managed assets totaling $90 billion and has backed successful IPOs including Okta, PagerDuty, Pinterest, Slack Technologies, Lyft, DigitalOcean, and Coinbase. Andreessen is among the few individuals to pioneer a software category adopted by more than a billion users and to found multiple billion-dollar companies.

Andreessen has been recognized by Time 100 as one of the most influential people in the world and was named one of the top 50 people under 40 by Time. He was also named Man of the Year by MicroTimes Magazine and received the Computerworld Smithsonian Award for Leadership. As a writer and commentator on technology, Andreessen published the widely discussed "Techno-Optimist Manifesto," which argues for the centrality of technology in societal progress. His statement that "software is eating the world" has become a defining perspective in the technology industry.
