Imani Gandy

Imani Gandy is a lawyer and journalist recognized for her work in reproductive justice media in the United States. Gandy has developed a career at the intersection of law, policy, and advocacy. She earned her JD from the University of Virginia School of Law, where she was a Hardy Cross Dillard scholar and served on the Editorial Board of the University of Virginia Law Review. She also studied English literature at Oberlin College. Before transitioning to journalism, Gandy spent 13 years in private legal practice, focusing on issues related to reproductive justice.

Gandy is the senior editor of law and policy for Rewire News Group, where she covers reproductive justice from a legal perspective and co-hosts the podcast "Boom! Lawyered." Alongside Jessica Mason Pieklo, she discusses legal developments in reproductive rights and policy. Gandy also hosts the podcast "B*tch, Listen," which explores topics including Blackness, queerness, reproductive justice, and the law. Through her work at Rewire News Group, Gandy develops federal and state policy resources related to anti-choice legislation and writes on legal issues in reproductive rights.

Gandy founded Angry Black Lady Chronicles, which received the Black Weblog Award for Blog to Watch and Best Political Blog. She also established the social action group People Organizing for Women's Rights to address discrimination. Her writing challenges narratives that undermine the agency of Black women, including pieces such as "No, abortion isn't like slavery" and "No, abortion isn't Black genocide."

Gandy has presented at conferences and panels including Abortion Care Network, Baffler Conference, YBCA 100 Summit, PPFA 100th Anniversary at Brooklyn Historical Society, SXSW Panel If Roe Were to Go, and the plenary for the National Abortion Federation's annual meeting. As a keynote speaker and industry expert, she addresses topics such as reproductive rights, civil rights, anti-racism, social justice, law, and female leadership. With a background in law and journalism, Gandy is a prominent voice in policy debates surrounding reproductive justice and rights.
