Gregory E. Abel

Gregory E. Abel, a seasoned executive and accountant, holds the position of CEO at Berkshire Hathaway as of January 1, 2026. He took the reigns from Warren Buffett after his retirement in late 2025. Abel has a rich background in managing a diverse portfolio of businesses under Berkshire Hathaway, including sectors such as insurance, energy, manufacturing, and services. His journey to the top of the business world started in his native Canada, where he graduated from the University of Alberta.

In addition to his role at Berkshire Hathaway, Abel holds significant positions in several other key organizations. He serves as the vice chairman of Edison Electric Institute and holds directorships in AEGIS Limited, Kraft Heinz, and Nuclear Electric Insurance Limited. Abel's leadership extends to the world of academia as well; he has served on the board of trustees for both Duke University and Drake University.

Abel's astute business acumen is evident in his personal financial decisions as well. In June 2022, he sold his 1% stake in Berkshire Hathaway Energy for a substantial $870 million. A few months later, in October 2022, he invested approximately $68 million into Berkshire Hathaway by purchasing 168 Class A shares. His leadership and success were recognized in 2018 when he was honored with a Horatio Alger award.
