Dr. Dean Edell

Dr. Dean Edell is an American physician and broadcaster recognized as a pioneer in medical talk media. Edell began his career as one of the first media doctors on KGO Radio in San Francisco. Trained as an ophthalmologist and surgeon, he studied zoology at Cornell University and earned his M.D. from Cornell University Medical School. Edell opened a private ophthalmology practice in San Diego and served as an instructor of anatomy and a clinical instructor at the University of California, San Diego. He later shifted his focus to medical communication, emphasizing the importance of sharing accurate health information with the public.

Edell hosted "Dr. Dean Edell," a syndicated radio talk show that aired live for more than three decades. The program reached hundreds of markets and millions of weekly listeners, establishing Edell as a leading voice in health communication. He also launched "Medical Minutes," short medical news segments distributed nationally. Edell became known for translating complex medical topics into accessible reports and for addressing obscure, unusual, and controversial health issues.

In addition to his radio work, Edell was nationally syndicated on television as a medical news reporter and host of programs including NBC's "Dr. Dean." He hosted health series for Discovery Channel and The Learning Channel, as well as the daily "Medical Report" broadcast in numerous television markets. Edell was the first physician employed full-time by a local television news station, KGO-TV. Throughout his career, he addressed declining scientific literacy in the United States, challenged pseudoscience and unproven health claims, and advocated for research into the therapeutic use of marijuana and psychedelic drugs.

Edell is also a bestselling author, with books including "Eat, Drink, & Be Merry: America's Doctor Tells You Why The Health Experts Are Wrong" and "Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Healthiness: Dr. Dean's Commonsense Guide for Anything That Ails You." He contributed to the field of medical journalism by providing unbiased medical advice, exposing irresponsible health reporting, and opposing the politicization of disease. Edell founded the health website HealthCentral.com and hosted syndicated television specials.

Edell has received several media awards for his work, including the C. Everett Koop Media Award, the Edward R. Murrow Award, a national Emmy, the American Cancer Society Recognition Award, the American Heart Association Award, and the George Foster Peabody Award for achievements in radio and television. Known as "America's Doctor," Edell retired from his radio program after a 31-year tenure, leaving a significant archive that continues to influence health journalism and medical broadcasting.
