Andra Day Biography
Andra Day is a singer-songwriter and actress known for her contributions to contemporary R&B, soul, and pop music. Day gained national attention with the song "Rise Up," a power ballad that earned a Grammy nomination and became associated with social justice movements. Her debut album, "Cheers to the Fall," received a nomination for Best R&B Album at the Grammy Awards, and "Rise Up" was nominated for Best R&B Performance. Day appeared with Stevie Wonder, who played a role in her early career, in an Apple TV advertisement.
In her first leading film role, Day portrayed Billie Holiday in director Lee Daniels’ "The United States vs. Billie Holiday." The performance earned Day a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama and an Academy Award nomination. The film's soundtrack won a Grammy Award for Best Original Song. Day has also appeared in Daniels' supernatural horror film "The Deliverance" and Titus Kaphar's independent film "Exhibiting Forgiveness."
At Super Bowl LVIII, Day performed "Lift Every Voice and Sing," a song often referred to as the Black national anthem. TIME recognized Day as one of its 12 Women of the Year. Day continues to be recognized for her impact in music, film, and social activism.
