Alex Cora Biography

Alex Cora is a Puerto Rican baseball professional whose career spans from standout collegiate player to World Series champion manager. Cora chose to play collegiate baseball at the University of Miami, where he was named to the College World Series all-tournament team and was rated by Baseball America as the best collegiate defensive player entering the draft. He was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the third round, beginning a professional baseball career that lasted nearly two decades. Cora played in Major League Baseball for 14 seasons with the Boston Red Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers, Cleveland Indians, New York Mets, Texas Rangers, and Washington Nationals. Known for his versatility and defensive skills, Cora was a reliable infielder and a respected presence in every clubhouse. One of his most memorable moments came with the Dodgers, when he had an 18-pitch at-bat against Chicago Cubs pitcher Matt Clement, fouling off 14 straight pitches before hitting a home run.

After retiring as a player, Cora transitioned into leadership roles in baseball. He served as a color analyst for baseball on ESPN and ESPN Deportes, communicating the game's nuances to broad audiences. He was named general manager of the Puerto Rico national team for the World Baseball Classic and also served as general manager and manager of Criollos de Caguas in the Puerto Rican Winter League. In his first year managing the Criollos, Cora led the team to win the Roberto Clemente Professional Baseball League, and his Criollos de Caguas won Puerto Rico's first Caribbean Series title in years. These experiences developed his managerial skills and prepared him for a role in Major League Baseball.

Cora served as bench coach for the Houston Astros during their first World Series title run. That success led to his opportunity to manage the Boston Red Sox, where he won a franchise-best 108 games and led the team to a World Series victory, making him the fifth MLB manager to win the World Series in his first season and the first Puerto Rican manager of a World Series-winning team. Cora has won three World Series rings — as a player, as bench coach, and as manager — and is one of only four individuals to win a World Series with the Red Sox as both a player and a manager.

Cora's tenure in Boston included challenges. Amid an investigation into a sign-stealing scandal, Cora and the Red Sox mutually agreed to part ways, and he was suspended through the playoffs for his role in the Astros' scandal. After his suspension, he returned to the Red Sox as manager. The Red Sox qualified for the postseason as a wild card and advanced to the American League Championship Series, marking a successful return. Cora departed the Red Sox with a final record of 619–541, making him the third-winningest manager in Red Sox history behind Terry Francona and Joe Cronin.

Beyond baseball, Cora has been an advocate for Puerto Rico, using his platform to highlight the island's needs. As Red Sox manager, he led a team contingent to Puerto Rico to deliver supplies for Hurricane Maria recovery. During contract negotiations, he requested that the Red Sox front office provide aid to Puerto Rico. Cora also chose to skip his team's scheduled White House visit, citing the administration's hurricane response as the reason. These actions have established Cora as both a baseball strategist and a community leader, recognized for his advocacy and leadership within the sport and beyond.
