Legendary Basketball Player & NBA Hall of Famer; Three-Time NBA Champion; Former Indiana Pacers Coach
Larry Bird Biography
Larry Bird is recognized as one of the most influential basketball players in the history of the sport. Known by the nicknames Larry Legend and the Hick from French Lick, Bird made a significant impact at Indiana State University, leading the Sycamores to an undefeated regular season and a national championship game appearance that marked the beginning of his rivalry with Magic Johnson. During his college career, Bird averaged 30.3 points and 13.3 rebounds per game, earning the Naismith Award, the John Wooden Award, and multiple College Player of the Year honors, departing as one of the highest scorers in NCAA basketball history.
Selected by the Boston Celtics with the sixth overall pick in the NBA Draft, Bird quickly transformed the franchise, leading the Celtics to a 32-win improvement in his rookie season and earning NBA Rookie of the Year honors. Over 13 seasons in Boston, he led the Celtics to five NBA Finals appearances and three championships, forming a Hall of Fame frontcourt with Kevin McHale and Robert Parish. Bird was a 12-time NBA All-Star, won three consecutive league Most Valuable Player awards, and earned two NBA Finals MVP awards. He concluded his playing career with averages of 24.3 points, 10.0 rebounds, and 6.3 assists per game, redefining the small forward position with his all-around game and clutch shooting. Bird held or shared 27 Celtics records at retirement, and his number 33 was retired by the franchise.
Bird's influence extended beyond individual achievements. Alongside Magic Johnson, he played a central role in revitalizing the NBA during the 1980s, increasing fan engagement and television ratings. Their rivalry, which began in the NCAA championship game and continued through Celtics-Lakers Finals matchups, became a defining narrative of the league's resurgence. Bird was a member of the U.S. Olympic Dream Team, which won the gold medal in Barcelona, and he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame both as an individual and as a member of the Dream Team. Bird also appeared as himself in films including "Blue Chips," "Space Jam," and "Celtic Pride."
After retiring as a player due to chronic back injuries, Bird transitioned to coaching, serving as head coach of the Indiana Pacers. Despite no prior coaching experience, he led the team to a 58-24 record in his first season and earned NBA Coach of the Year honors. Bird guided Indiana to three consecutive Eastern Conference Finals appearances and an NBA Finals berth. He later became President of Basketball Operations for the Pacers, rebuilding the franchise into a consistent playoff contender and earning NBA Executive of the Year honors. Bird is the only person in NBA history to win NBA MVP, Coach of the Year, and Executive of the Year awards. He co-authored the autobiography "Drive: The Story of My Life," detailing his journey from a small Indiana town to basketball prominence. Bird's legacy is commemorated at the Larry Bird Museum in Terre Haute, Indiana, which celebrates his career at every level of the game.
