John C. McGinley Biography

John C. McGinley is an American actor, writer, and producer whose career spans four decades across film, television, and theater. McGinley studied acting at Syracuse University and later at New York University's Graduate Acting Program at the Tisch School of the Arts. He was noticed by a casting scout while working as John Turturro's understudy in John Patrick Shanley's production of "Danny and the Deep Blue Sea," which led to a successful audition for the role of Sergeant Red O'Neill in the Oscar-winning film "Platoon."

That role marked the first of a series of collaborations between director Oliver Stone and McGinley, including "Wall Street," "Talk Radio," "Born on the Fourth of July," "Nixon," and "Any Given Sunday." McGinley worked continually throughout the 1990s, appearing in films such as "Point Break," "Seven," "The Rock," and "Office Space."

A high-energy supporting actor and occasional lead in numerous features, McGinley became a familiar face to audiences through films like "Platoon," "Wall Street," and "Any Given Sunday." His most recognized television role is Dr. Perry Cox, Chief of Medicine on "Scrubs." His portrayal of the acerbic yet compassionate doctor earned critical acclaim and a dedicated fan following, highlighting his ability to transition between comedic and dramatic moments. McGinley received a TCA Award nomination for individual achievement in comedy from the Television Critics Association and a Golden Satellite Award nomination for best performance by an actor in a series for his work on "Scrubs." The tenth season of "Scrubs" premiered on ABC as a revival of the series, with McGinley reprising his role as Dr. Cox in the nine-episode revival as a recurring cast member.

He received positive reviews for his starring performance as Dave Moss in the Broadway revival of David Mamet's Pulitzer Prize-winning drama "Glengarry Glen Ross," in a production that also featured Al Pacino and Bobby Cannavale. He was previously featured on Broadway in "Requiem for a Heavyweight" and off-Broadway in "The Ballad of Soapy Smith" and the original cast production of Eric Bogosian's "Talk Radio," both at the Joseph Papp Public Theater/New York Shakespeare Festival. McGinley also starred in the horror comedy television series "Stan Against Evil" on IFC, playing a retired sheriff who helps his replacement fight supernatural threats in their small town.

Beyond his acting career, McGinley is an advocate for the disability community. He serves on the board of the Global Down Syndrome Foundation, is a celebrity ambassador for the National Down Syndrome Society, and is a global ambassador for Special Olympics, where he contributed to the "R-word: Spread the Word, To End the Word" campaign. McGinley has delivered keynote addresses at academic institutions such as the University of California San Francisco's School of Medicine.
