BLKBOK Biography

Charles Wilson III, known professionally as BLKBOK (pronounced "Black Bach"), is a neo-classical pianist and composer recognized for his genre-blending approach to contemporary classical music. Identified as a piano prodigy at age eight, Wilson earned statewide accolades and competed at the collegiate level early in his development. His stage name pays homage to Johann Sebastian Bach and reflects his deep roots in hip-hop and pop culture, a duality that informs his creative output. Trained for more than a decade in classical piano, Wilson cites influences ranging from Mozart and Chopin to Mos Def and Kendrick Lamar, integrating elements of hip-hop, pop, and classical traditions.

Before establishing himself as a solo artist, Wilson built a career as a lead pianist, music director, and studio musician, collaborating with artists such as Justin Timberlake, Rihanna, John Mayer, Demi Lovato, and the Backstreet Boys. He also worked as a studio musician with Timbaland and performed in the Cirque du Soleil production of "Michael Jackson: One." These experiences contributed to his versatility and ability to engage audiences across musical genres.

Wilson's debut album, "Black Book," marked his emergence as a solo artist and was recognized by The New York Times as one of its "5 Classical Albums to Listen to Right Now." CNN Entertainment also highlighted the album alongside Lady Gaga's reissue of "Born This Way." "Black Book" was featured at the inaugural Juneteenth Foundation's Freedom Concert, reflecting Wilson's commitment to using music as a platform for cultural dialogue and social awareness. His second album, "9," is a tribute to the Little Rock Nine, exploring themes of disparity, equity, and Black excellence. Wilson further expanded his repertoire with the release of "Urban Etudes: Vol. 1."

Among Wilson's notable achievements is his original composition "Stars (Ad Astra)," which became the first piano duet performed between a musician on Earth and an astronaut in space, in collaboration with astronaut Michael López-Alegría. Wilson is also recognized as a Yamaha Artist, joining a select roster of classical pianists. Through live performances, university masterclasses, and classical piano interpretations of hip-hop music, Wilson continues to bridge musical worlds, encouraging musicians of color to embrace their identities and inviting audiences to experience the transformative potential of genre-defying sound.
