Dr. Roni Ellington Biography

Dr. Roni Ellington is a scholar, educator, and STEM leader with a career focused on equity and inclusion in mathematics and STEM education. As professor of mathematics education at Morgan State University, Ellington integrates research and practical experience to prepare future STEM educators. She holds a doctorate in mathematics education from the University of Maryland and has more than 25 years of experience as a transdisciplinary scholar, researcher, STEM leader, and professional development expert. Ellington began her career as a secondary mathematics teacher in the Baltimore City Public School System and has served as a mathematics lecturer in the Morgan State University Department of Mathematics.

Ellington has authored scholarly articles on STEM education, parental involvement, STEM professional development, and the STEM pipeline, with a focus on minority students. She is co-author of the book "Capitalizing on Culture: Successful Patterns of Parental Participation for African American Students," which examines how parents can leverage human and social capital to support their children’s success in STEM disciplines. Ellington also served as co-editor and contributor for the book "Fostering Computational Thinking among Underrepresented Students in STEM." Her work includes book chapters on equity and diversity in STEM education, culturally responsive teaching in undergraduate STEM education, and transformative practices in mathematics and STEM education.

In her TEDx talk, "An Angry Black Woman's Rant on the Future of STEM Education," Ellington addresses the lack of diversity in STEM fields and the barriers faced by students of color. She discusses the leaky STEM pipeline and introduces her Transformative Framework for STEM Education as a strategic tool for addressing inequities.
