Dr. Kwane Stewart Biography

Dr. Kwane Stewart is a veterinarian, humanitarian, and activist with a career spanning more than two decades in veterinary medicine. A graduate of the Colorado State University Veterinary program, Stewart has practiced in California for over 26 years. He began his career as an associate and emergency clinician in San Diego before advancing to Chief Medical Officer of VETCO Hospitals. Stewart later served as County Veterinarian, where he improved outcomes at a municipal shelter with one of the nation's highest euthanasia rates. He also held the role of Chief Veterinary Officer at American Humane and directed the "No Animals Were Harmed" program, overseeing animal welfare on film and television sets worldwide. Stewart has served as a veterinary consultant for Netflix, providing animal oversight on productions including "War Horse" and "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood."

A pivotal moment in Stewart's career occurred while working as a shelter veterinarian on Skid Row in Los Angeles. After treating the pet of an unhoused individual, he recognized the challenges faced by those unable to afford veterinary care. Stewart began offering free veterinary services to pets of people experiencing homelessness, initially setting up a table near a food bank and later expanding his outreach efforts.

This grassroots initiative evolved into Project Street Vet, a nonprofit organization providing free veterinary care, treatment, and support to pets of individuals experiencing homelessness or housing vulnerability. Stewart and his team treat the majority of cases with portable medical kits and fund more complex procedures, such as surgeries and diagnostics. Project Street Vet operates in multiple cities, guided by the philosophy, "No Judgment. Just Help."

Stewart's work is featured in the docuseries "The Street Vet," which documents his efforts to provide veterinary care on the streets of California. He is also the author of the memoir "What It Takes to Save a Life: A Veterinarian's Quest for Healing and Hope," which examines the human-animal bond and addresses issues such as compassion fatigue and burnout in the veterinary profession.

Stewart has received recognition for his contributions to animal welfare and veterinary medicine, including being named CNN Hero of the Year and receiving a Distinguished Alumni Award from Colorado State University.
