Political Economist & Social Technologist; Founder of Plurality Institute; Author of "Radical Markets"
E. Glen Weyl Biography
- Glen Weyl is a political economist and social technologist focused on leveraging emerging technology to strengthen democracy, pluralism, and cooperative society. Weyl graduated as valedictorian from Princeton University and completed the coursework and exams for a doctoral degree in economics as an undergraduate, earning his PhD under the supervision of Jean Tirole, José Scheinkman, Hyun-Song Shin, and Roland Bénabou. After receiving his doctorate, Weyl served as a Junior Fellow at the Harvard Society of Fellows and as an assistant professor at the University of Chicago before joining Microsoft Research as an economist and researcher.
Weyl is the founder and research lead of Microsoft Research's Plural Technology Collaboratory, which is recognized as a leading plural technology research group. The Collaboratory collaborates across Microsoft Research, various divisions of the company, academic institutions such as Harvard, industry partners like Protocol Labs, and civil society organizations including the Collective Intelligence Project. Weyl was also part of the leadership team in Microsoft's Office of the CTO, where he contributed to the company's relationship with OpenAI. He teaches a course at Yale University titled "Designing the Digital Economy," which integrates economics and computer science, reflecting the interdisciplinary approach of digital economists in the technology sector.
Weyl's work has influenced discussions at the intersection of economics, technology, and governance. He contributed to the development of quadratic voting, a collective decision-making procedure, and quadratic funding, a method for democratically allocating resources. Weyl co-authored "Radical Markets: Uprooting Capitalism and Democracy for a Just Society," which was named Economist Book of the Year, and co-wrote "Decentralized Society: Finding Web3's Soul," a widely downloaded paper on SSRN. He was the first author of the open-source, democratically governed book "⿻ 數位 Plurality: The Future of Collaborative Technology and Democracy" and executive-produced the short documentary "Good Enough Ancestor." Weyl has published numerous scholarly and popular articles in journals and outlets including Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, American Economic Review, Harvard Law Review, and New York Times.
Outside of Microsoft, Weyl co-founded and chairs the Plurality Institute, founded the RadicalxChange Foundation, and co-founded and co-chairs the Faith, Family and Technology Network. He has collaborated with technologists such as Audrey Tang, Jaron Lanier, and Vitalik Buterin. Weyl has pioneered new economic models, open standards, and systems for funding and voting to enhance public goods provision, with organizations and governments worldwide adopting his concepts to improve decision-making processes.
Weyl has been recognized as one of blockchain's most influential figures by CoinDesk and as a leading visionary in technology by WIRED and Bloomberg Businessweek. He was the first technologist to receive the International Religious Freedom Secretariat Peacebuilder Award and received the Tapia Award for Scientific Achievement, Civic Science and Diversifying Computing. Weyl's work continues to challenge established perspectives on markets, democracy, and the role of technology in fostering equitable and cooperative societies.

Plurality and the Future of AI
AI carries twin and seemingly contradictory threats: of destroying the social fabric through omnipresent and persuasive deception and of concentrating power in a “singularity” of model creators or models themselves. These two threats are narrowing the corridor in which plural (free and democratic) societies can thrive. To avoid this Scylla and Charybdis, we must harness these tools to proactively widen that corridor, a strategy that has been labeled “Plurality” by its leading practitioner, Taiwan’s Digital Minister Audrey Tang who has made that country the light to the free world. Drawing on his forthcoming book jointly with her, Glen will show you how to harness Plurality to improve health, fuel productivity, and create a richer media environment, all by harnessing and contributing to human diversity and cooperation through digital technology.

Surviving Online when Deception is Omnipresent and Omnipotent
The next wave of generative foundation models (GFMs) succeeding ChatGPT and DALL-E will make an indistinguishable and arbitrarily manipulable simulation of human content (e.g., video, voice, documents) ubiquitous, liquidating much of the foundation of social cooperation and trust.
Maintaining trust and collaboration will require a revolution in verification and dramatically expanded applications of cryptography. Luckily, Web3 ecosystems like Ethereum and countries like Taiwan have been coping with similar threats for years now. In this talk, Glen will draw lessons from these experiences to help individuals and organizations of all sizes survive and thrive in this disruption.
