Danielle Teller Biography

Danielle Teller is an author and physician whose career spans medicine, nonfiction, and literary fiction. Teller received her medical training at McGill University, Brown University, and Yale University. She held faculty positions at the University of Pittsburgh and Harvard University, where she investigated the origins of chronic lung disease and taught in the medical intensive care unit. While practicing medicine, Teller was on faculty at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard University when she was diagnosed with breast cancer, an experience that influenced her perspective as both a physician and a writer. After working in academic medicine for many years, Teller transitioned to writing when family circumstances brought her to California.

Teller's entry into publishing began with nonfiction, co-authoring the book "Sacred Cows: The Truth About Divorce and Marriage" with her husband. The book examines cultural assumptions and misinformation surrounding marriage and divorce, encouraging readers to question widely held beliefs. Teller also contributed columns to Quartz, establishing her voice on social and cultural topics.

Her fiction debut, "All the Ever Afters: The Untold Story of Cinderella's Stepmother," reimagines the classic fairy tale from a new perspective. The Washington Post compared the novel to other notable literary inversions, highlighting Teller's nuanced portrayal of characters. Booklist praised the novel for its complex retelling and balance between the familiar and the original. Teller's approach to character development often challenges traditional female protagonist tropes, presenting women who shape their own destinies.

Teller's second novel, "Forged," published by Pegasus Books, explores historical fiction through the story of a Gilded Age con artist. The novel follows a protagonist who escapes poverty in Canada, reinvents herself in the United States, and becomes a forger inspired by the real-life figure Cassie Chadwick. Reviewers noted the novel's suspenseful narrative and its exploration of themes such as power, reinvention, and identity.

Teller's scientific background and experience in medicine inform her storytelling, adding intellectual depth and authenticity to her work. Her ability to navigate both the medical and literary fields positions her as a distinctive voice in contemporary literature, blending scientific insight with creative narrative.
