 Bruce Feiler Biography

He has traveled to over sixty countries, on five continents, immersing himself in different cultures. The result is numerous acclaimed books that take readers along on his fascinating adventures and bring other worlds vividly to life.

Learning to Bow: Inside the Heart of Japan (1991) is an account of the year he spent teaching in a small Japanese town. The Washington Post called it “always fascinating and often funny…one of those rare books that shows the Japanese as fully rounded human beings.”

Looking for Class: Days and Nights at Oxford and Cambridge (1993) brings to life the world’s most prestigious academic institutions. “How completely recognizable the world he describes is,” wrote the Los Angeles Times, “how vividly he makes it spring to life before us.”

Under The Big Top: A Season with the Circus (1995) depicts the year he spent performing as a clown in the Clyde Beatty-Cole Bros. Circus. The book was hailed as “a stunning collective portrait” by The New Yorker and “inspirational” by The New York Times.

Following two years on the road with the top stars in country music, he published Dreaming Out Loud: Garth Brooks, Wynonna Judd, Wade Hayes and the Changing Face of Nashville (1998), which the Washington Post called “well written and meticulously researched ... essential reading for anyone who cares about American music.”

Walking The Bible: A Journey By Land Through the Five Books of Moses describes his perilous, 10,000-mile journey retracing the greatest stories ever told through the desert. The book was proclaimed an “instant classic” by the Washington Post and “thoughtful, informed, and perceptive” by The New York Times. Named one of the best books of the year by the Los Angeles Times, it spent more than a year on The New York Times bestseller list, has been translated into 15 languages, and is the subject of a children’s book, a photography book, and an upcoming PBS documentary.

In Abraham: A Journey to the Heart of Three Faiths (2002), Feiler recounts his personal search for the shared ancestor of Jews, Christians, and Muslims. “Exquisitely written,” wrote the Boston Globe, “100 percent engaging.” The book was featured on the cover of TIME Magazine, became a runaway New York Times bestseller, and was named one of the best books of the year by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Christian Science Monitor, beliefnet.com, and Publishers Weekly. It also inspired thousands of grassroots interfaith discussions around the world.

His latest book, Where God Was Born: A Personal Journey to the Roots of Religion (2005), describes his yearlong trek through the frontlines of Israel, Iraq, and Iran, looking for the origins of Western religion in the unseen places of the Bible. The book is due out in the fall of 2005.

A native of Savannah, Georgia, Bruce Feiler writes for numerous publications and is a contributing editor for Gourmet and Parade. He also is a frequent contributor to National Public Radio and CNN. He has been the subject of a Jay Leno joke and a JEOPARDY! question, and his face appears on a postage stamp in the Grenadines.
