Los Lobos Biography

Los Lobos is an American rock band formed in East Los Angeles by David Hidalgo, Louie Pérez Jr., Cesar Rosas, and Conrad Lozano. The group began by performing energetic renditions of Mexican folk music at local restaurants and parties, blending traditional styles such as cumbia, boleros, norteños, and Tex-Mex with blues, rock, and R&B. This fusion established a distinctive sound that contributed to the evolution of Chicano rock and roots music. In the 1980s, Los Lobos became part of Los Angeles' punk and college rock scenes, sharing stages with acts including Circle Jerks, Public Image Ltd., and the Blasters. Steve Berlin, saxophonist for the Blasters, later joined Los Lobos.

The band achieved national recognition with a Grammy Award for Best Mexican-American Performance for "Anselma" from the EP "…And a Time to Dance." Their major-label debut, "How Will the Wolf Survive?," received critical acclaim in the college rock community. Los Lobos' rendition of "La Bamba" for the Ritchie Valens biopic became the first Spanish-language song to reach No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The group continued to explore their Mexican folk roots with "La Pistola y El Corazón," which won a Grammy Award and appeared on the Billboard 200.

Los Lobos expanded their musical range with albums such as "The Neighborhood" and "Kiko," the latter known for its experimental production and melodic innovation. Subsequent releases, including "Good Morning Aztlan," "The Town and the City," "Tin Can Trust," and "Gates of Gold," showcased the band's continued evolution in songwriting and ensemble performance, addressing themes relevant to the American experience. The instrumental "Mariachi Suite" from the film "Desperado" earned the band a Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Performance.

The band's lyrics, primarily written by Louie Pérez, reflect the environment and consciousness of the barrio, addressing topics such as identity, immigration, mental health, self-love, community, and Mexican-American heritage. Los Lobos performs in English, Spanish, and Spanglish, promoting cultural pride and intercultural understanding.

Los Lobos received the Grammy Award for Best Americana Album for "Native Sons," a studio album produced in East Los Angeles that pays tribute to the city's musical heritage. The band has also been honored with the Latin Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, the BMI Icon Award, and induction into the Austin City Limits Hall of Fame. With a discography that includes 17 studio albums, seven live albums, three compilations, two EPs, two DVDs, and more than 40 guest recordings, Los Lobos continues to influence the East Los Angeles music scene and the broader landscape of American rock, Chicano music, and roots music.
