Chef, Culinary Educator & Cookbook Author; Co-Founder of Junzi Kitchen & Nice Day Chinese; James Beard Media Award Winner; Host of "Street Eats"
Lucas Sin Biography
Lucas Sin is a Hong Kong-born chef, writer, and culinary educator recognized for his work in Chinese cuisine and culinary education. Sin opened his first restaurant at age 16 in an abandoned newspaper factory in Hong Kong, where he served a 13-course tasting menu three nights a week. In the United States, while studying cognitive science and English at Yale University, Sin created a series of student-run pop-ups from his dormitory. He gained international culinary experience by backpacking and cooking through Japan, interning at Kikunoi Honten in Kyoto, and working at restaurants in Hong Kong and New York. Sin also developed baking skills with the Modernist Bread team in Bellevue, Washington.
Sin co-founded Junzi Kitchen and Nice Day Chinese, two restaurant brands focused on everyday Chinese cooking. Junzi Kitchen highlights the noodles and bings of northern China, while Nice Day Chinese pays homage to American Chinese dishes found in takeout restaurants across the United States, such as Mongolian beef, lo mein, and orange chicken. Sin hosted Chef's Table, a monthly dinner series that explored the intersection of Chinese food and other cultures through collaborative tasting menus. He has contributed writing on Chinese cuisine and culture to Lucky Peach and Cleaver Quarterly.
Sin hosted a street-food series on YouTube for Bon Appétit and opened Nice Day, a Chinese-American pop-up restaurant in New York City, which reinterpreted classic American Chinese dishes and addressed economic challenges facing Chinese restaurants. He launched delivery tasting menus with online demonstrations and educational content about Chinese cuisine, aiming to provide culinary education and counter anti-Asian sentiment. Sin also serves as a culinary educator on YouTube for National Geographic, Food52, and Bon Appétit, for which he received a James Beard Media Award. He is the host of "Street Eats," a Bon Appétit show documenting global street food.
Sin authored the cookbook "Cha Chaan Teng," which explores Hong Kong-style comfort food and the cultural history of the neighborhood diner. He spent years documenting the food of Hong Kong's cha chaan teng, learning recipes from chefs who have refined them over their careers. Sin has been recognized by Forbes 30 Under 30, Food & Wine Best New Chef, StarChefs Rising Star, and Eater Young Gun, reflecting his contributions to Chinese cuisine, culinary storytelling, and food culture.
