Randy Schekman Biography

Randy Schekman is a professor of molecular and cell biology at the University of California, Berkeley, specializing in the molecular mechanisms of vesicle transport within cells. Schekman’s research focuses on how cells assemble and regulate the passage of vesicles—small, sac-like structures that transport molecules internally and between cells. After graduating from UCLA, Schekman earned a doctorate in biochemistry at Stanford University, where he studied under Arthur Kornberg. He joined the faculty at UC Berkeley immediately following his doctoral studies.

At Berkeley, Schekman investigated the networks of intracellular membranes involved in vesicle transport of proteins in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. His laboratory identified mutations in yeast that blocked the secretion of specific enzymes, leading to the discovery of membrane fusion regulator proteins encoded by SEC genes. Schekman demonstrated the similarity between the secretory pathways of yeast and human cells and applied these findings to research on genetic diseases related to protein transport. This work contributed to advances in biotechnology and the treatment of diseases such as diabetes and hepatitis B. His laboratory has also explored vesicular traffic in human cells, including the biogenesis and sorting of small RNAs into extracellular vesicles.

For his contributions to understanding the genetic mechanisms underlying vesicle transport, Schekman received the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine, which he shared with James E. Rothman and Thomas C. Südhof. His achievements have been recognized with honors such as election to the National Academy of Sciences, the Albert Lasker Award for Basic Medical Research, the Louisa Gross Horwitz Prize, and membership in the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Schekman donated his Nobel Prize money to the University of California to establish the Esther and Wendy Schekman Chair in Basic Cancer Biology at UC Berkeley.

Schekman is also known for his advocacy of open access publishing in biomedical research. As founder and inaugural editor-in-chief of eLife, an open-access journal supported by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, the Wellcome Trust, and the Max Planck Society, he promoted a model of scientific publishing that emphasizes rigor and accessibility. Schekman has served as editor-in-chief of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences and has been a public advocate for making taxpayer-funded research freely available.

Schekman serves as scientific director of Aligning Science Across Parkinson's (ASAP), a global research initiative partnered with The Michael J. Fox Foundation, which coordinates teams worldwide to investigate the molecular origins of Parkinson's disease. His work includes research on the unconventional secretion of alpha-synuclein, a protein implicated in the pathology of Parkinson's disease. Schekman frequently delivers keynote addresses at scientific conferences and university events, communicating complex topics in cell biology and biomedical science to diverse audiences.
