Attorney & Indigenous Rights Advocate; Founding Attorney of Sovereignty and Justice Law; Author of "Tactics for Racial Justice"
Shannon Joyce Prince Biography
Dr. Shannon Joyce Prince is an attorney, legal commentator, author, and advocate whose career focuses on law, Indigenous rights, and social justice. Prince earned a doctorate in African and African American Studies and a master's in English from Harvard University Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, a law degree from Yale Law School, and a bachelor's degree from Dartmouth College. Prince is Cherokee, a background that informs her commitment to advocating for Indigenous peoples and communities.
Prince drafted best practice language on policing policies for the National Initiative for Building Community Trust and Justice, represented plaintiffs in CCJEF v. Rell, a landmark education adequacy lawsuit, and represented the Cherokee Nation in a lawsuit against pharmaceutical distributors and pharmacies for their role in the opioid crisis—a case in which the Cherokee Nation was awarded $75 million. This was the first case brought by a tribal nation seeking to hold those dispensing prescriptions responsible for an epidemic of opioid addiction. The case drew national attention and established Prince as a litigator focused on representing vulnerable communities in high-profile litigation.
Prince is the founding attorney of Sovereignty and Justice Law, where her practice centers on Indigenous rights. As the founder of Sovereignty and Justice Law, PLLC, her work supports Tribal Nations and Native individuals through litigation that protects sovereignty, enforces rights, and advances justice. Her commitment to ethical leadership in the legal profession is reflected in her involvement with the Fellowships at Auschwitz for the Study of Professional Ethics (FASPE). As a Fellow at Auschwitz for the Study of Professional Ethics, she serves on the Alumni Steering Committee and is a co-producer, co-moderator, and discussant in FASPE webinars. She has also received the Distinguished Fellow Award from FASPE, which honors individuals who have demonstrated high ethical standards in their fields.
Beyond the courtroom, Prince is a writer and public intellectual. Her work has appeared in The Hill, Transition Magazine, Science, and Jezebel, among other publications, and she authored the book "Tactics for Racial Justice" published by Routledge. The book focuses on antiracist tactics—specific techniques that individuals of any race can use to advance justice. Prince also provides televised legal commentary, offering analysis on issues of law, race, and equity for public audiences. Her academic credentials, litigation experience, and personal connection to the communities she serves position her as a leading voice in social justice law and Indigenous rights advocacy.
