Kira Hudson Banks Biography

Kira Hudson Banks, Ph.D., is a psychologist, scholar, and racial equity expert whose work informs how individuals, institutions, and communities address systemic racism. Banks has more than two decades of experience supporting individuals and groups in understanding themselves, others, and systems of oppression. Her teaching, research, and community involvement are grounded in the principles of Black Psychology, emphasizing interconnectedness and resilience while rejecting deficit-based approaches.

Banks serves as a professor in the Department of Psychology at Saint Louis University. She earned a doctorate in clinical psychology from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and a Bachelor of Arts from Mount Holyoke College, where she was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa.

Banks' research focuses on two primary areas: the experiences of African Americans with discrimination and mental health, and diversity in higher education and intergroup relations. She has published more than 20 articles in peer-reviewed journals, including American Psychologist, Cultural Diversity & Ethnic Minority Psychology, and Journal of Diversity in Higher Education. Her work has also appeared in The Harvard Business Review, The Atlantic, and The Guardian. Banks received an APA Citizen Psychologist Presidential Citation for her contributions to transformation, learning, and action following the Ferguson, Missouri, protests and for her leadership in racial equity in the St. Louis region.

Banks' community engagement began when City Garden Montessori Charter School invited her to facilitate discussions about racism, leading to her involvement in supporting the school's commitment to becoming an anti-biased, anti-racist institution. Her efforts expanded to the broader Ferguson community, where she served as a racial equity consultant for the Ferguson Commission and as the racial equity catalyst for Forward Through Ferguson. In these roles, Banks developed frameworks and documents foundational to building a community focused on racial equity. She also launched the Racial Equity Roundtable, a community of practice that brings together regional executives and leaders to share lessons and receive feedback on implementing a racial equity lens.

Banks is a co-founder of the Institute for Healing Justice and Equity at Saint Louis University and co-principal of The Mouse and the Elephant, a diversity, equity, and inclusion consulting firm that develops customized curricula for organizations. Her expertise includes working in predominantly white settings to help community members build skills for effective intergroup interactions, using interactive games, reflective exercises, and group discussions. Banks has delivered a TEDx talk titled "Applying the Lessons of #MeToo to #BlackLivesMatter" at TEDxAmoskeagMillyard in Southern New Hampshire.

Banks created a YouTube channel to make psychological concepts accessible to the public, an effort that evolved into her podcast "Raising Equity," which explores raising children with an equity mindset and preparing them to contribute to a more equitable society. Her work is recognized for making complex topics in race, justice, and systemic change accessible and understandable, positioning her as a prominent voice in conversations about racial equity, social justice, and community transformation.
