Tim Ellis Biography

Tim Ellis is an American aerospace engineer and entrepreneur recognized as the co-founder and founding CEO of Relativity Space, a company that has redefined rocket design and manufacturing through advanced additive manufacturing and 3D printing technologies. Ellis co-founded Relativity Space with Jordan Noone, aiming to become the first company to launch a fully 3D-printed rocket into orbit. Ellis and Noone secured initial funding by reaching out to investor Mark Cuban. As founding CEO, Ellis led the company’s growth to more than 1,500 employees, raised over $2 billion in funding, and established a commercial launch backlog exceeding $3 billion.

Prior to Relativity Space, Ellis developed his expertise at Blue Origin, where he worked as a propulsion development engineer on crew capsule RCS thrusters, the BE-4 engine, and New Glenn. He was instrumental in introducing metal 3D printing capabilities at Blue Origin. Both Ellis and Noone held leadership roles at the University of Southern California Rocket Propulsion Lab, contributing to the launch of the first student-designed and built rocket to reach space. These experiences provided Ellis with a comprehensive understanding of aerospace manufacturing and motivated him to pursue innovative approaches in the industry.

Relativity Space’s core innovation centers on large-scale additive manufacturing. Ellis implemented 3D metal printing, machine learning, and automated manufacturing processes to produce rockets and satellites. The company developed a 3D metal printer capable of producing 95 percent of rocket parts for vehicles up to 10 feet in diameter and 100 feet tall. This approach reduced the number of moving parts in a rocket from 100,000 to about 1,000, streamlining production and reducing potential points of failure. Under Ellis’s leadership, Relativity Space’s demonstration vehicle, "Terran 1," became the world’s first predominantly 3D-printed, methalox-powered rocket to reach space, marking a significant milestone in aerospace engineering.

Ellis also directed the early development of "Terran R," a next-generation reusable heavy-lift rocket, and helped establish major launch and manufacturing facilities at Cape Canaveral, Vandenberg Space Force Base, and NASA Stennis Space Center. He played a key role in securing partnerships with the U.S. government, including the first U.S. Air Force launch site award to a venture-backed company at Cape Canaveral and exclusive long-term agreements for test sites and manufacturing facilities at NASA Stennis Space Center. Relativity Space has been recognized by CNBC as a Disruptor 50 company and received the IEEE Spectrum Award for its "Stargate" factory technology.

Ellis has contributed to discussions on the future of commercial space exploration and policy, testifying before the U.S. Senate and serving as the youngest member of the National Space Council Users Advisory Group, advising the White House on space policy. After transitioning from the CEO role, Ellis continued to guide Relativity Space’s long-term vision as a member of its board of directors. He remains active in the aerospace industry, sharing insights on commercial launch systems, reusable rockets, additive manufacturing, and the future of space exploration.
